The prime time game will feature two coaches surrounded with controversy and questions. For the Dolphins, Joe Philbin will be under scrutiny to get a better understanding what his knowledge of the so-called bullying in the locker room was and if he can or should be held responsible. As the Bucs, they are veterans at this stage in dealing with controversy. First it was diving at the knees of offensive linemen when opponents were trying to run out the clock, then it was the Josh Freeman debacle, and most recently is was the MRSA outbreak. I’m pretty sure that is going to dominate the pre-game talk much more than the actual product on the field, but for the sake of actual football, I’ll pick the Bucs to earn their first win of the season.

This is the classic strength versus weakness with Drew Brees’ third-ranked passing offense facing the Cowboys’ 31st ranked passing defense. The Cowboys are just 1-3 on the road while the Saints are undefeated and Drew Brees has been lights out in New Orleans this season. He has averaged 361 yards and thrown 14 touchdowns compared to just two interceptions at home while completing 72.1% of his passes. This has all the signs of a blowout, but the Cowboys are just as capable of putting up big numbers. Tony Romo has thrown a touchdown pass in 22 straight games which is the second-longest active streak in the NFL and the Cowboys are the fourth-ranked scoring offense as a whole.

The Texans will turn to Wade Phillips as the interim head coach as Gary Kubiak continues to recover from his TIA episode that took place at halftime of last week’s game against the Colts. Kubiak’s role as head coach won’t be nearly as tough to fill as his importance to the offensive play calling. Just look at last week: Case Keenum was an entirely different player in the first half than he was in the second without Kubiak.

Much like the Texans, the Broncos will turn to the defensive coordinator, Jack Del Rio, while John Fox misses the next couple of weeks to focus on his health. And just like Wade Phillips, Del Rio has recent head coaching experience and will continue to call the defense. I think that transition is much easier than an offensive coordinator trying to maintain both responsibilities. Many would just assume that because of Manning, that this game will be a cakewalk, but Manning actually has a losing record in head-to-head games against Rivers in his career (3-4).

If Charles Tillman and Calvin Johnson are the headline individual matchup of the weekend, this game will feature one that is almost as exciting: the Niners’ Vernon Davis against the Panthers’ Luke Kuechly. Kuechly has matured into one of the most versatile defenders in all of the NFL as he may make a run-stuffing play at the line of scrimmage on one play and then defend a deep pass in man coverage on the next. This ability to man-up the league’s most talented tight ends is what I’m most excited to see against Davis this weekend. The 49ers are going to try to ground and pound, but may have trouble against what could arguably be the best defensive front four in the entire NFL, so it will be up to Kuechly to stop the 49ers down the seam on play action or quick-strike passing game. If this game were played on neutral ground, I’d feel more comfortable picking the upset, but because the 49ers are at home, I’m going to have to roll with them.

Andrew Luck has been sacked 16 times this season and led by Robert Quinn, the Rams have had at least one sack in 17 straight games. Because of that, the Rams have posted a top-10 passing defense. If Luck can avoid the pressure, he will once again look to Ty Hilton to replace the chemistry lost with Reggie Wayne’s season-ending injury. In his debut as the main target last week, he didn’t disappoint with three touchdowns on the day. Luck has just three interceptions on the season and four total turnovers, and that is a major factor in the Colts’ 6-2 record. Those four turnovers are the fewest for a quarterback that has started his team’s entire slate of games and because of that, I’m going with the Colts at home.

Jay Cutler will return from his groin injury, but the Bears offense seemed to be in relatively good hands under Josh McCown. It will be interesting to see how short his leash is in this game if Cutler gets off to a slow start, but the real story inside the game will be Chicago’s defense, particularly Charles Tillman’s matchup with Calvin Johnson. Johnson is coming off a game in which he nearly broke the NFL all-time record for receiving yards in a game with 329, but he has averaged less than 40 yards against Tillman in his career. Peanut has figured out something that no one else in the entire league can match and that may be the best individual matchup to watch this entire weekend.

Will the real Andy Dalton please stand up? Just when we thought Dalton was ready to take his play to the next level, Dalton came out in Week 9 and threw three interceptions and added a lost fumble. Add that to his career struggles against the Ravens (1-3 with a 55.3 completion percentage) and things are stacking up against Dalton for this weekend. Still, the Ravens have lost four of their last five and are in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in John Harbaugh’s career. The loss of Geno Atkins will really bring this team down, but I still view them as one of the most complete teams in the AFC and I’ll go with them even on the road.

The last time these two teams met was in the divisional playoffs last year in which the Falcons won 30-28. In that game, Russell Wilson had a career high in passing yards with 385 and added two touchdown passes. Wilson was 11-5 as a rookie in the regular season last year, the exact same rookie record for Matt Ryan -- which puts them in a tie in second place for most wins by a rookie quarterback. This year, Wilson has the third-best passer rating and has led his team to a 4-1 record on the road. Ryan has thrown seven interceptions in his last two games but has been much better at home this season. In Atlanta, he has thrown just one interception and maintains a 112.9 passer rating compared to nine picks and a 70.0 passer rating on the road. Additionally, Matt Ryan has never lost to the Seahawks with a 3-0 career record, but I don’t see that holding up on Sunday.

The Giants started the season 0-6 but have since turned it around to win their last two. During that two-game winning streak, almost all of the improvement has occurred on the defensive side of the ball. In their six losses, the Giants were giving up an average of 34.8 points per game. In their two wins? Just seven points per game while just averaging 1.3 more points scored. Eli has refrained from throwing an interception in their last two games, but also has thrown just one touchdown. If they can get the offense rolling along with the improved defense, they are still very much in the race in the very shaky NFC East. I’ll take the Giants at home against a Raiders team that struggled majorly last week and will have to endure the cross-country road trip.

Chris Johnson had all but been forgotten this season, but he had a breakout game against the Rams last week in which he earned his first rushing touchdown of the season and posted his highest rushing total since Week 7 of last year. He should be able to build off that effort against the Jaguars, who are the 27th-ranked total defense and dead last in both scoring and rushing defense. Jake Locker completed just 13 passes last week and that may be the total number of attempts for him this week as the Titans should be pounding the ground game all day. I’ll take the Titans at home, but not in a blowout.

If you can count on one thing, it’s that the Steelers defense is always going to be stout against the run … well, except this year. The Steelers currently rank as the 31st rushing defense and now they will have to face the very explosive CJ Spiller. Spiller is coming off his best game of the season and it came against the best defense in the league versus the Chiefs last week. Spiller totaled 116 yards on just 12 carries and I fully expect his to get closer to 20 on Sunday. The Bills will most likely also have rookie QB EJ Manuel back for the first time since Week 5, but it’s going to be all about the running game against the Steelers -- who gave up 610 yards to the Patriots last week. Big Ben has been sacked 10 times in the last two weeks and will need to keep Mario Williams at arm’s length if he wants to have enough time to build on his 400-yard passing game of last week. I’ll take the Bills in a close game.

Up until this point, Eddie Lacy and the Packers rushing offense was just an added bonus to a team that had the best player in the NFL at the most important position. But now, Lacy and the other backs must carry this team for 4-6 weeks while Aaron Rodgers nurses his collarbone back to health. As it stands now, the Packers are the second-ranked running team in the NFL, but now that they are the focal point, it will be interesting to see if they can continue that pace. The Eagles are ranked dead last in total defense but 15th against the run. I imagine they will stack the box and force the Packers to win one-on-one outside with a still-depleted group of receivers and now a second-string quarterback. This could be just the upset the Eagles need to gain momentum in the NFC East and I’ll take a flier on them.
