There’s not much you can say about a franchise that went to four straight Super Bowls and lost them all – three of them by 13 or more points. The Sabres haven’t won the Stanley Cup yet, and the short-lived Braves never won an NBA title, either. The Bills consistently play in sub-freezing temperatures and will forever have to live down being the NFL home of O.J. Simpson. This city needs this more than anyone. -- Gerrit Ritt

They didn’t do it four years in a row, but the Vikings are 0-4 in their Super Bowl history as well. They’ve survived the Sex Boat, the Whizzenator, the untimely death of Korey Stringer and about three or four retirements from Brett Favre. They too play in a cold-weather city where the only time some fans leave their homes in December is to go to the Metrodome on Sundays. Bud Grant (pictured, at left) won't rest quietly until this franchise finally breaks through.

Only four teams in the NFL have yet to make it to a Super Bowl, with the Lions being the only one of those who’s been a part of the league since before 1998 (you could argue the Browns, but not really). This franchise has been so bad for so long, it almost hurts to watch (example, the 0-16 season). Not getting Barry Sanders to a Super Bowl was tough enough. Not getting there with studs like Ndamukong Suh and Calvin Johnson on your roster would be almost as bad.

Poor Cleveland. They lose the original Browns to Baltimore, they lose to “The Fumble” and to “The Drive,” they could never beat Michael Jordan, the only time the Indians win is in the movies and now they lose LeBron James to Miami. All in all, not the best resume. You have to feel for these fans, especially now. I know a Super Bowl’s not happening anytime soon for these Browns, but hopefully the Mike Holmgren era can get this thing turned around in a hurry. Pictured: Former Browns running back Jim Brown.

They’ve been to two Super Bowls, losing one to the Raiders (of all teams) and the other to Tom Brady and the Patriots. They’ve been doing things the right way for a long time and deserve it as much as any team in the game today. Going to four consecutive NFC Championship Games in the 2000s without a title was a crushing blow to their fans, who are as rabid a bunch as you’ll find anywhere outside of Oakland. Only Tampa Bay and New Orleans have seen more brown paper bags over their fans’ heads than Cincinnati. It’s too bad, because this team was good enough to win a Super Bowl several times, but just couldn’t get over the hump. The Bengals have been consistently good the last 10 years as well, but they’ve had worse luck than just about any team in the league. All they really need is something to pull it all together. Could a new owner be that missing link?

I know they won a Super Bowl, but that was way back in 1970 (Super Bowl IV vs. Minnesota). Since then, they haven’t even made an appearance in one, despite at various times employing Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Derrick Thomas, Marcus Allen and Tony Gonzalez (future HOFer for sure). Kansas City’s the home to one of the best fan bases in the game, but the team hasn’t been competitive the last three years, with just 10 wins over those 48 games. That’s unfortunate, because they create one of the best football atmospheres, making Arrowhead Stadium one of the toughest places to play in the NFL.

This team was so bad for so long, there were doubts they’d ever make it to a Super Bowl. Well, time was on their side, as they finally made the big game after the 2008 season, coming within a last-second TD of beating the Steelers in their first big-game appearance. Losing Kurt Warner will make it hard to get back there soon, but after 22 non-winning seasons in a 23-year stretch, one of the league's oldest franchises has the backing of virtually every fan in the country. They’re basically the Chicago Cubs of the NFL, having not won a championship since 1947, the longest stretch of any team in league history.

Where are you, Joe Namath?! The Jets haven’t been to the big game since Broadway Joe led them to a Super Bowl III title in 1969. That’s a stretch of 42 seasons for a team in the biggest market in the country. Their fans deserve better than that … and they just might get it with the weapons they have on the squad right now. For the fans alone, the Seahawks need to be on this list. The “12th Man” flag hangs atop the stadium each and every game, and there’s a reason for that. Very few fan bases are more dedicated to their team than those who back the Seahawks, who almost got that sweet taste of victory in the 2006 Super Bowl, but lost 21-10 to Pittsburgh in Ben Roethlisberger’s rookie year. Can the new Pete Carroll regime get them back there? The entire northwest region of the country has its fingers crossed. -- Gerrit Ritt
