Michael Phelps

Phelps won eight gold medals in Beijing, breaking the 26-year-old record for gold medals in a single summer Olympics. Phelps won his golds in various fashions — with a flair for the dramatic at times, with relative ease at others — and did so as an individual in 5 events and as a teammate on 3 relays. In addition to being Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year, he's our top athlete of 2008. — Peter Schrager
