CLEVELAND BROWNS 2009

Quarterback

It's one of the few positions of strength on the team. Deemed the franchise quarterback, Brady Quinn is likely to be the starter. Derek Anderson is just two seasons removed from a Pro Bowl appearance.

\ Offensive line

Tackle Joe Thomas and guard Eric Steinbach make for a solid left side. First-round draft pick Alex Mack needs to pan out at center. The right side is shaky, but should improve once guard Rex Hadnot returns from injury.

Receiver/tight end

Braylon Edwards enters his contract season in hopes of atoning for a tough 2008. But Edwards will fade if the Browns cannot find help opposite him. Mike Furrey should help in the slot. The trade of tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. leaves a big hole.

\ Running back

Running backs usually begin to dip at age 30. The Browns cannot afford for Jamal Lewis (30) to fall off. Look for rookie James Davis to challenge for playing time. He hits the holes quicker than Lewis. Jerome Harrison, who averaged 7.2 yards per carry last season, should also help.

\ Defensive line

Shaun Rogers might be the team's best player when he's healthy and happy. Ahtyba Rubin also has some skill. Corey Williams, who had half a sack last season, is looking like a bust.

\ Linebacker

This could be the league's worst unit. Outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley needs to develop new pass-rushing moves. Backup outside linebacker Alex Hall could be a player to watch.

\ Secondary

The Browns have decent corners in Eric Wright and Brandon McDonald, but the safeties are causes for concern. Abram Elam will have to deliver in a key role.

\ Special teams

It's probably the best unit on the team. Josh Cribbs is an exceptional return man. Phil Dawson and Jeff Zastudil are solid kickers. And for all his poor draft picks, Butch Davis got one right in long-snapper Ryan Pontbriand.

\ Coaching

Eric Mangini had two winning seasons in New York with lineups that weren't littered with Pro Bowlers. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan should bring a meaner attitude to the table. Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has followed Mangini from New England to New York and Cleveland. This is his first crack as an offensive coordinator. \
