UP-DOWNS

Hunter Smith [up]

Redskins' SECONDARY [down]

Not just beaten on two long first-quarter passes to Brandon Marshall, spectacularly beaten

DEVIN THOMAS [up]

Twisting, darting, 27-yard catch-and-run by second-year wide receiver sets up winning score

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Ladell Betts

Filling in at running back for Clinton Portis, the hard-running eight-year veteran started slowly (23 yards in the first half) but came on strong and finished with 114 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries for his first 100-yard game since 2006.

PLAY OF THE GAME

Score: Denver 14, Washington 7

Quarter: Second, 6:39 remaining

Situation: Redskins' ball, fourth-and 20 on the Denver 35

The play: With punter Hunter Smith holding, Shaun Suisham lined up to kick a 53-yard field goal. Then he split wide to the left, leaving Smith in a shotgun formation. But after the snap, Smith rolled to his right, pump-faked and threw across the field, hitting a wide-open Mike Sellers for a touchdown.

UP NEXT

WASHINGTON Redskins (3-6) AT DALLAS Cowboys (6-3)

When: Sunday, 1 p.m.

Where: Cowboys Stadium

TV/radio: Ch. 5, ESPN 980

Outlook: One of the league's best rivalries shifts to Cowboys Stadium for the first time as the Redskins meet first-place Dallas. The Redskins are coming off a much-needed win against the Broncos, while the Cowboys need to get their offense back in gear after nearly being shut out by the Packers.
