Warren still feels miffed at Shanny
by Lindsay H. Jones The Denver Post , The Denver Post
"I don't hold anything against the city of Denver, but the Broncos organization, I hold a lot against," Warren said Wednesday in a conference call with Denver media. "I was kind of banking on finishing my career in Denver when I signed my contract there; that was the impression that I was under when I signed with Shanahan."
Warren, the third pick in the 2001 draft by Cleveland, started 31 games for the Broncos in 2005-06 and was part of the 2005 defense that had the league's second-best run defense.
Shanahan made a litany of changes to the team after that season, including releasing defensive lineman Trevor Pryce and running back Mike Anderson and drafting quarterback Jay Cutler, who replaced Jake Plummer by the middle of the 2006 season. Warren, at 6-foot-4 and 330 pounds, was deemed not to be a fit for the defensive scheme installed by Jim Bates in 2007.
``I think we should have kept the team from '05 intact and tried to make a run for the Super Bowl instead of reorganize and go a different direction,'' Warren said. ``We had the formula and the chemistry together in that locker room to maybe succeed and win two or three championships, but when they didn't go in that direction, it kind of threw a lot of guys' life off course.''
