Zorn to give up Redskins playcalling duties
Sources told FOXSports.com that following Sunday's game, Zorn met with Redskins vice president Vinny Cerrato, who basically told him that the head coach had too much on his plate and that he wanted him to succeed as head coach. They agreed that Zorn would relinquish playcalling duties.
Later Sunday, Redskins spokesman Zack Bolno confirmed that information.
On Monday, the team announced that Sherm Lewis, who was hired by the Redskins last week in a consultant role, would take over the playcalling.
Zorn admitted Monday that the front office "strongly suggested" that he yield his play-calling duties to a consultant hired only two weeks ago. While he didn't say he was given an ultimatum, Zorn said he would comply with the request "because I want to stay here and win."
"Sometimes we have to do things that are uncomfortable," Zorn said.
The move comes amid heavy criticism of the beleaguered Zorn all season long, which had grown each week as the Redskins lost four of their first six games against the NFL's weakest schedule. Zorn's offense has not scored more than 17 points in any game this season. In Sunday's loss, Washington earned only seven first downs and failed to score a touchdown.
"This offense is better than six points, 100 percent. And that's on me," Zorn said before the change in his duties was announced. "It's my fault."
Since starting 6-2 in 2008, the Redskins have lost 10 of their last 14 games.
