Edwards not working

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards was not practicing today and was not even watching practice as the Bills prepared for Sunday's game at Carolina. Edwards suffered a concussion against the New York Jets three days ago. Edwards' absence is a pretty good indication Ryan Fitzpatrick will be starting against the Panthers.

Also absent from the practice session in the fieldhouse were safety Donte Whitner (ankle) and tackle Jonathan Scott (ankle).

Watching practice but not working out were: defensive tackle Kyle Williams (shoulder), tight end Shawn Nelson (concussion) and cornerback Terrance McGee (shoulder).

Williams' absence from the defensive line would be a big loss. He has been playing very well. Carolina ranks No. 8 in the NFL in rushing, and the Bills are No. 32 in run defense.

Receiver James Hardy was participating in practice for the first time since training camp. He has been unable to practice with the team the past six weeks because he opened the season on the physically unable to perform list due to his offseason knee surgery.

Also back at practice, looking like he was working fully, was safety Bryan Scott, who has missed the past three games with a high ankle sprain. If Whitner is able to play this week, however, Scott may not be back in the starting lineup. Given the way rookie Jairus Byrd has played the past two weeks, he's probably locked into the free safety spot most of the time.
