PATRIOTS 35, BUCCANEERS 7
by By IAN R. RAPOPORT , The Boston Herald
In the Patriots' 35-7 win against the Buccaneers at Wembley Stadium yesterday, Welker showed what he meant.
He led both teams with 10 catches for 107 yards, his second-straight 100-yard game. The highlight was his touchdown catch on a 14-yard screen pass in which he weaved in and out of defenders behind blocks from offensive linemen Logan Mankins and Sebastian Vollmer. ``Those guys did a great job of getting a hat on a hat, and when I saw (cornerback) Ronde Barber slip, I knew we had a chance to get into the end zone,'' Welker said.
Good news on Ty
Defensive end Ty Warren left in the second half with a right ankle injury and did not return. After making three tackles, Warren was examined by team doctors and coach Bill Belichick, then was carted off the field.
Following the game, Warren told the Herald he does not believe the injury is serious. He was limping, but with the upcoming bye week, he doesn't feel like he'll miss any time.
Picking the field
Unlike the 2007 Giants-Dolphins game here, there were few issues with the Wembley field. Rain mostly stayed away, and the NFL had help with the grounds, so complaints were few.
``It was an awesome stadium,'' Belichick said, ``and the surface was good.''
Players did slip and slide from time to time, and Barber described it as ``slick. But there's some turf up (in the Northeast) that feels like that.''
Linebacker Pierre Woods said the key was breaking down and staying balanced.
``I had nice spikes on,'' he said. ``I was all right.''
Big man Tate
Wide receiver/kick returner Brandon Tate eased his way back onto the field.
The rookie came off the non-Football injury list late Saturday night and was active for the game. The former North Carolina star, who underwent knee surgery last year, carried one time for 11 yards on an end-around. He also returned two kicks for 44 yards.
``Just to get my feet wet, it was pretty good,'' Tate said. ``Football's all about one play at a time, you just don't (want to) get overwhelmed by everything.'' Asked if he believes he's earned more time, Tate said, ``We'll see. We got, what, nine games left? That's like a whole season.''
Penalty killers
On fourth-and-7 from their 41-yard line, the Patriots attempted a fake punt that began a rough sequence.
First, Mankins jumped early, negating a run for no gain by Brian Hoyer.
Then, following the false start penalty, Chris Hanson's 26-yard punt was partially blocked by Maurice Stovall.
The Bucs turned the possession into seven points thanks to an Antonio Bryant 33-yard touchdown catch. In all, the Patriots had 10 penalties for 66 yards, including Mankins' three false starts and a holding. Vollmer held twice.
``We play in noisy stadiums every week,'' Belichick said. ``That's no excuse. We're going to have to silent count every time we're on the road.''
Seau a winner
Linebacker Junior Seau has played in 24 consecutive regular-season wins, dating back to 2006. It ties the Dolphins' Maulty Moore (1972-73) for the longest personal win streak since the AFL/NFL merger. . . .
When the Pats led 21-0, they had scored 80 unanswered points, the most in a single season since Buffalo had 86 in 1992.
