Herman Edwards: Good teams win in November

Herm Edwards, a former Monterey High and MPC standout, is an NFL analyst for ESPN. Each week, the former NFL coach will share his thoughts with The Herald's John Devine.

Now reality is sinking in for the 49ers . November is when you see separation. The good teams have gotten better. The teams that aren't so good are falling off.

This is the month where you have to win. If you can go 3-2 in November, you have a shot at the playoffs. Arizona is a measuring stick for the 49ers . They are getting better. Can the 49ers get better over the next 10 games?

The 49ers are sitting on the ledge. Where are they going to go?

Alex Smith was a really young player (20) when the 49ers drafted him. He has gone through the pit falls of being a first-round pick and not being successful.

He has matured. Last week it all came to fruition for him. He showed the ability to bring the team back with the passing game. Smith can get out of the pocket and make some plays. And he's got a stronger arm to stretch the field.

If Alex can get the ball into Michael Crabtree's hands along with Vernon Davis, they can make plays. With opponents leaning on Davis so much, Crabtree is going to get his shots.

Facing the Colts is Indy is tough. Their success all boils down to Peyton Manning. He's turned two young receivers into legitimate players. That's what a great quarterback does.

? The Raiders' problem is they don't play good run defense. But for God's sake, you have to go in with the mind set that the quarterback on the other side is shaky.

They had to know the Jets were going to run the ball last week. What the Raiders did was give them a short field in the first half. All of a sudden it's 21-0. Now you have a problem. You let the Jets have the ability to run.

JaMarcus Russell has to grow up and stand up and take the blame along with the coach. His job as a quarterback is to protect your players.

The quarterback plays with the ball on every offensive play. He has the ability to move the ball. That's what he is paid to do and win.

? I don't believe there will be a team in the NFL that goes undefeated this year. But if the Rams don't beat the Lions this week, they could go winless.
