RETURNS OF BOLEY, CANTY PROVIDE GIANT UPGRADE

GIANT NOTES

Help is on the way to aid the ailing Giants defense.

Linebacker Michael Boley and defensive tackle Chris Canty are both scheduled to take part in practice tomorrow when the Giants begin their on-field preparation for Sunday's game against the Chargers.

Last week, the injured duo took part in some individual drills, but this week they will be pushed even further. They certainly are needed, with the Giants riding a three-game losing streak.

Moving Boley, who has missed the last four games, to weak side linebacker and Canty, who has missed the past seven games, into the middle of the defensive line rotation would be significant upgrades for a defense that has allowed 112 points in the past three games - the most in any three-game span by the Giants since 1973.

The news isn't as promising on cornerback Aaron Ross, who hasn't played all season because of a strained hamstring. Last week he said he was making progress, but coach Tom Coughlin said Ross is not even ready to participate in individual drills.

"I don't see it this week," Coughlin said. "Maybe next."

DT Justin Tuck nearly had a touchdown when he batted a Donovan McNabb pass into the air, but McNabb beat Tuck to the ball and caught it for a one-yard gain.

"I was going to hopefully pick it off and score, but he got to it before I did," Tuck said. "Funny how the ball bounces sometimes."

Tuck didn't think it was funny when he dove and missed on a tackle attempt at the line of scrimmage on Eagles FB Leonard Weaver as Weaver sped by on a 41-yard TD.

Tuck believes one of his arms was held down by Eagles TE Brent Celek, preventing him from making the tackle.

"I'm going to try to refrain from answering that question so I don't get fined," Tuck said. "Yeah, he was holding my arm, absolutely. The things I'm thinking about I could get fined for."

Coughlin said he met yesterday morning with Eli Manning, whose poor play has helped fuel the three-game losing streak.

"We've been in this type of situation before," Coughlin said, "and we got to fight our way out of it."

There's no medical updates on WR Domenik Hixon (hip pointer) and WR Sinorice Moss (foot), who both were forced out of the 40-17 loss to the Eagles. Coughlin said WR Mario Manningham, who sat out the Eagles game with a shoulder injury, "said he felt better."
