Teammates support disheartened Brown Kubiak & Co. say kicker's miss just part of game
by By JOHN McCLAIN, HOUSTON CHRONICLE , The Houston Chronicle
His field goal would tie the game and force overtime - just like his 56-yarder at the end of the first half cut into the Colts' lead and gave the Texans some momentum.
The snap by Joel Dreessen and the hold by Matt Turk were good, but there was one problem: Brown's kick was wide left.
No excuses
"I just missed it," Brown said after the Colts' 20-17 victory in a somber Texans dressing room. "I take a lot of pride in coming through in those situations, but this time I didn't do my job."
Trailing by three with 1:46 left, the Texans had the ball at their 15 with no timeouts remaining. Quarterback Matt Schaub moved them to the Colts' 24. He spiked the ball with one second left.
"I'm disappointed," Brown said. "Guys were busting their tails, and they put us in position to win, but I didn't do my job."
Because Brown has produced so many times in clutch situations, the players and coaches thought they were headed to overtime.
"Kris is Mr. Automatic," cornerback Dunta Robinson said. "It's tough, but we're going to need him down the line, and he'll make them."
Coach Gary Kubiak tried to encourage Brown after the game.
"Kris has made a lot of big kicks for us, and he's going to make a lot more," Kubiak said. "I told him we believe in him, and we're going to count on him again. He's been kicking very well."
Egg on Caldwell's face
At the end of the first half, Brown missed his first 56-yard attempt, but Colts coach Jim Caldwell called timeout before the kick, and it backfired. Brown made the next one to make it 13-3.
"I felt real good about that one because it gave us some points and some momentum," Brown said.
