Minus Johnson, Chiefs starless
by David White, Chronicle Staff Writer , The San Francisco Chronicle
Prepare for the Chiefs without L.J.? That's like facing the Chargers without L.T. - just a little weird.
"It's going to be a little different," Raiders middle linebacker Kirk Morrison said. "We all know what Larry brings to their Football team, what he did."
What Johnson did was rush 222 times for 938 yards 4.7 yards per carry with 12 touchdowns in 10 games against Oakland, including five 100-yard performances.
Yes, he's been running on fumes since his 1,700-yard seasons of 2005-06. But, how will the Raiders get worked up over replacement backs Jamaal Charles , Dantrell Savage and Kolby Smith
"Larry was a very good player, so it impacts it to some degree," Raiders coach Tom Cable said of game planning. "They still have good runners."
Indeed, it might not matter who carries the ball. The Raiders rank 29th in run defense with an NFL-high 13 rushing touchdowns allowed.
Morrison remembers Smith as the third-stringer who ran 31 times for 150 yards and two scores at Oakland two years ago. It's just that "K.S." doesn't roll off the tongue as far as nemesis nicknames go.
"We have to make sure we limit those runs and the big plays that they have," Morrison said.
Mystery starter: Wide receiver Chaz Schilens remains on track to make his first start since mid-August foot surgery.
Cable won't name his starting receivers because he plans to use them all interchangeably.
"It just depends on the personnel that you're going to use to attack them," Cable said. "There's just some things you want to do."
That means Schilens will share snaps with rookie starters Louis Murphy 16 catches, 232 yards and Darrius Heyward-Bey 5-74.
Briefly: Raiders defensive end Greg Ellis had recent arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder, and not just minor knee surgery, Cable disclosed Wednesday. The team's co-leader in sacks is questionable for Sunday. ... Punter Ricky Schmitt worked out for the Raiders on Wednesday with an eye toward making their practice squad for a second straight season.
