Report: White House to honor '85 Bears

Published Sep. 21, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

The 1985 Chicago Bears are set to finally be honored at the White House, almost 26 years after winning Super Bowl XX, CSN Chicago reported Wednesday, citing sources.

The Bears went 15-1 that season before crushing New England 46-10 in the Super Bowl. They are widely considered to be one of the greatest ever NFL teams, along with the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins.

They were not, however, honored at the White House for the traditional celebration because the victory came just two days before the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded and killed its crew.

President Barack Obama, a longtime Bears fan, is reportedly set to make up for it when he hosts the team on October 7.

The majority of the players, as well as some of the members from the front office and coaching staff, are expected to attend.
