The New England Patriots offered former Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas a contract Monday, according to a report in the Miami Herald.

"We had a great visit in New England," agent Drew Rosenhaus wrote in a text message to the Herald Monday evening. "They offered him a contract and we will continue negotiations."

The report said the specifics of the contract are still unknown, though it clearly was not good enough for Thomas to sign immediately.

Rosenhaus confirmed to the Herald that Thomas will continue to visit other teams, including New Orleans and Dallas.

The Dolphins terminated Thomas' contract Thursday, making the 7-time Pro Bowler a free agent.

Taken in the fifth round of the 1996 draft by Miami out of Texas Tech, Thomas has recorded more than 100 tackles in 11 of his 12 seasons as a Dolphin, including a career-high 195 in 2002. He led the Dolphins in tackles every season from 1996-2006

Thomas has recorded 19.5 sacks and 17 interceptions, including four returned for touchdowns, in his career.
