Brett Favre may be determined to play football in 2008, but it now seems unlikely he will do so in Green Bay.

The legendary quarterback has officially asked the Packers to release him, FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer reports. The request was first reported by ESPN.com.

Favre's request comes just days after Green Bay officials downplayed the prospect of a return to the NFL.

"What I remember about him is he was ready to retire, and that's how I feel today. I think down deep, that's exactly how he feels," team chairman Bob Harlan said, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

The 38-year-old Favre retired March 6 after a 17-year career.

The Packers plan to use Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback for the upcoming season.

Being a Steeler fan, I think I can say my opinion is not a biased one.

Whats going on with all the Favre bashing? The guy has played the game this long purely FOR THE FUN OF IT. Has it been a secret to anyone that this guy just loves to play the game? It's not an easy decision to leave the game you love and the guy can obviously STILL PLAY THE GAME.

One more thing Filthy, in regaurds to the previous 2 post seasons; Favre never said he was gonna retire. It was all speculation. The Pack would say just let us know by mini-camp, and every year he would end up saying "I can see myself playing for another 2 or 3 years."

Filthy-- you are the idiot. Why don't you talk about something you know about. Thompson started with Packers in '05; Barnett drafted in '04, Driver in '99, Williams '04 and Thompson let Williams go to Browns this past off season. Not to mention drafting Justin Harrell last year with 15th overall, and Nelson this year when we could've had him later in draft, or being 30 million under cap last 3 years. Since you clearly don't know squat about the Pack, please spare us your diatribe.

i have to go colefort, nice talking with you...
You never know maybe the packers will wake up

That would be interesting. I would hate to see that happen to Rodgers though because there would be no chance of him having a fair shot unless he was perfect

I was at the Denver GB Super Bowl....Gilbert Brown was moving slow at the end of that game

I hate the Broncos and Elway too, but I have to give it to the organization, they knew they were close and that it was coming to the end for Elway and they did everything they could to help him win. (even cheating the salary cap)

Unfortunately I don't see brett sticking around as a back up but he would only have to do it the first game and then the fans would be going nuts to get him back in

With all of the QBs that were sure things that have not panned out, it just seems rediculous to put all of your money on Rodgers when you are so close, and cut your ties to someone you know can do it. How are you going to have Favre backing up Rodgers? Can you imagine the calls for Favre if they lose the first game. They could destroy Rodgers if they tried that

I was thinking the same thing.......When he gets hurt then what ? oh Thompson gets the ax

You got me. Everyone acts like Aaron Rodgers has earned the spot, but the way I look at it is we are giving up two legitimate shots at least to get to the SB. If they went with Favre and he stunk, you could put in Rodgers. If Rodgers stinks or gets injured, we have nothing. I don't thinkt half the people on here realize that before the Dallas game he played about a quarter's worth of football and got injured both times

I can't believe we are even talking about this...
Brett has one of the best years of his career and they don't want him to play. whats wrong with this picture?

Where did this Ted Thompson come from and where will he go when he gets the boot

I hate both teams, but I don't see Hassleback going anywhere

I didn't even think about that. I wouldn't even want to see those ticket prices. They have a good O-line and running game though, and who knows, their WRs haven't had anyone to throw to them. Favre could be the perfect fit QB for them to have a quick run. They would also probably be willing to go out and get him some help unlike the Packers

i'd rather see him go to Seattle.... I hate the vikes

that would be something on opening day at green bay.....Rogers- favre show down... the vikes don't have anyone to catch the ball though
