Glazer: Gonzalez wants out of K.C.
"The Chiefs have a three-year plan to make this team good," Gonzalez said late last night. "They are going young and at this point in my career, I want to play for a known contender a team that has a chance to get to win the Super Bowl before my career ends. If it doesn't happen, of course I'll play my butt off at the same level I always have. But by the time their plan comes to fruition I'll be finishing up my career."

So Gonzalez went to team president/general manager Carl Peterson as far back as three weeks ago and asked for a trade, a deal he believed would benefit both sides. The Chiefs at first were reluctant to even remotely entertain the thought of bidding farwell to their most popular player of the last decade. But in the ensuing weeks Gonzalez continued to work on Peterson, appealing to their relationship.
"Carl has been like my third father figure so he understands me better than anyone in this business," he said. "He knows we're going to experience some growing pains for a while and I asked him to let me finish my career on a team not in a rebuilding mode. Normally I don't think it would be considered, but we have a different relationship than most.
"He said he understood and if there was a deal that would work for both sides, he'd try to make it happen for me."
The Chiefs have held talks with several teams but the franchise at least among those rumored to be interested that is most attractive to him is the Giants. Obviously New York makes the most sense on paper, considering they are already rolling and have proven they can win the Big Game. Gonzalez would add veteran leadership they lost with the retirement of Michael Strahan. Plus his addition to their red zone attack would give the Giants offense quite the advantage.
The Giants, thus far, have shown lukewarm interest. One Giants source said the team is not jumping at the chance because they have been thriving with the league's top-rated offense, even without star wideout Plaxico Burress a week ago.
"We haven't really been using our tight end in the passing game much," said one Giants source.
With that said, the Giants offense has rolled so far, but that success has come primarily against teams with weak defenses. As the franchise hits the meat of their schedule and try to roll through the NFC East, why would they not take their chance with a sure-fire Hall-of-Famer such as Gonzalez?
While Gonzalez would likely have to agree to any trade, the Chiefs have called all over the league not just to contenders letting it be known that he could be had.
"It has to be a deal that works for both sides," he said. "That's what we talked about, only doing it if we can find something that works for both sides.
"Look, I'll always be a Chief but other players have moved on later in their careers looking for that ring. Reggie White, Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Marcus (Allen), Favre ... it happens. This isn't easy for me to do. It's out of character for me but they may as well get something for me at this point."
MORE TRADE SCOOPAGE: In addition to Gonzalez, FOX Sports has also learned that in those calls, the Chiefs have also been offering star running back Larry Johnson as well, informing teams he could also be available for the right offer.

Worth a thousand words:
The only other significant name that is popping up on the trade rumor grapevine is Lions WR Roy Williams. While the team is not actively shopping him, they've had a change in direction with regards to whether or not they would move him. When Matt Millen was the man running the show he was not willing to listen to any inquiries. But now that Millen is gone, the team has changed course and is willing to at least listen.
Emphasis on listen.
Because the Lions are NOT shopping Williams, any team that is serious about trading for a bonafide No. 1 wide receiver needs to make the call and try to swing the deal. It's unlikely any deal would get done as the Lions could probably get the same value in the offseason that they could garner now and still have his services for the remainder of 2008.
PAC-ING IT IN? After his well-publicized incident this week, Adam "Pacman" Jones faces league scrutiny and possible punishment. However, if you ask his teammates he doesn't deserve to be booted.
Jones, after a practice late this week, addressed his teammates, telling them how sorry he was for bringing scrutiny and unneeded attention and distractions to the club. In addition, he's been talking privately with some players and opening up about his background, admitting he needs to find a way to permanently change.
One problem? The bodyguards. With the team having bodyguards following and driving Pacman everywhere he goes, it automatically places him in a situation where he's treated like a star a much bigger star than he really is and not a problem child.
So what happens now? Commissioner Goodell will finish gathering evidence hopefully by Tuesday and make the decision. It does not appear that a lifetime ban is an option. Instead, if anything there could be a small suspension and/or fine.
When the league reinstated Jones it was with a stern warning that one more major foul up and he's a goner. However, there was a little wiggle room put in place in case the incident did not warrant getting banished forever.

Well, Gonzalez has a point - to a point. He showed class by trying to privately handle this. We dont know exactly what he was told, just what Gonzalez chose to tell the press after not getting what he wanted.
He did sign a contract, he should and will honor it. KC should do the right thing for one of their best all-time players and deal him for what he is worth - after the season. Maybe KC did try to deal him, but didnt receive what they felt were fair offers. Always more than one side to the story.

colonelscookin. your popcorn has completely popped!! If you think for one second the Giants would even entertain the thought of trading Eli for tony you need to seek psychological help immediatley. You are obviuosly a more than over hopeful desperate Chiefs fan who has completely and totally lost your mind. You need to blog a whole lot better than that and come up with something that is viable and not some head stuck in your ass comment. I hope the Cardinals pick him up for possibly a 2nd round pick next year and maybe a 5th rounder in 2010 that would make a whole lot of sense and would greatly improve the Cards offense. Go cards!!!!!

The statement that having bodyguards automatically puts him into an unwarranted stardom position is patently ridiculous. While the large majority of the NFL never require such extreme treatment it is obvious that the few, meaning Pac, that do receive such extremem treatment still have the ability to sully themselves, the league and their franchise.

A better statement, read conclusion, would be that Pac is a pathological stain on society. He is an embarrassment to the NFL. He is a criminal recidivist at his worst. He is the reason we have built good jails. He will, someday soon, become a resident of one.

Gonzalez is a class act, and he has handled this with the utmost professionalism. He went to the team and talked it over, he didn't use the press to pressure them. And he has a valid point; the Chiefs won't be in SB contention for a few years, and he has the talent and ability to help a true contender. Can't blame him for asking, and the Chiefs look like they are a class act too, at least willing to try and help the guy get a ring after so many years of faithful support from him.

Good luck to him, hope he gets his wish.

ColonelsCookin, are you retarded? The Giants will never, ever, ever consider trading their franchise quarterback for an old tight end with a year or two left. Don't comment on sites if you are special please!

nissie-that's the problem (obviously you don't realize this) is that Gonzalez HAS been doing his job at the top of his level for YEARS! He is the best TE according to all-time stats (hince the broken record, but I guess you didn't read or hear about that either). I respect the fact that this guy has been a workhorse and consistant since the beginning. Never had a holdout as far as I know of, never got on TV bashing his team or causing problems off the field. The guy scores and breaks records and doesn't do a dance or anything. The most spectacular thing he ever did after scoring was dunking the ball thru the uprights (a true testiment of his athleticism if you ask me). With all that I've seen him do, I say grant his wish. Even with him going public about his potential trade, he still didn't talk bad about his organization and he wasn't whining about money, he just wants a ring. I figure as hard as he has played (and on a losing team to boot) he should get the opportunity to showcase his talent on a team that has the potential to at least get to the playoffs.

Trade Tony for Eli Manning....don't think it would fly, but chiefs may have a chance

There are guys in the league that deserve special treatment Junior Seqau, Jason Taylor and Tony fit into this cartogy guys who show unfolding decation, loyality and play! Give Tony what he wants the guy is a stand-up act and I would have to say that the KC organization has let this guy down. Tony has went out there are quietly broke records and has played on HOF level even when the team had back to back losing season's. Give him to NY he deserves his shot!
I hate to have this a issue, but I have to say the fact that this story is making headlines proves that reporters and writers have extrememly to much free time! I have to say when the story first surfaced i was in the 70%+ who thought just get rid of this guy! Let him bag grociers or (more likel;y) appear on WWE for chump change. But the more details the more I actually feel remorse and sorry for Pac. we've come to a time now that a man isn't able to have a argument? My concerns with Pac is that he's not in places to put himself or others in trouble(strip clubs, bars, casion's etc). Or that no one outside gets injuried(bi-standards aka strippers) But where trying to ban Pac for getting into to a argument in a hotel room? There were no charges, no witness and really no reason this should be news. You put Football players in a room your going to hear noise period! Let's no forget Pac is not OJ he doesn't deserve a lifetime of guilt. The guy got into to a argument with his bodyguard, no one fought or got hurt! Shouldn't his bodyguard be able to protect himself from the person he's protecting?

Talk about a class act Tony has been quietly breaking records in KC for decades and he deserves a chance. I put him in the same cartogry as Junior Seau he played hard fopr all his years and showed his loyality now it's time for KC to give a little. The more I read about this stupid inncident the more I think reporters and writers have extremely to much time. When I first heard about the inncident I was in that same boat with probably about 60% of the fans, like get this guy out of the league. But when do we get to the point of fans and human where a man can't have a argument. The bodyguards are put their by Warden Jones to protect Pac from himself, but when you have a grown man there are going to be altercations. The facts I'm worried about was there a serious disturbance NO, was anyone outside of Pac and bodyguards injuried or involved NO and did Pac make it rain NO! So as far as I'm concerned Goodel has no standing there was no charges, no witness to anything all we're going by is noise! And lets not be stupid Pacman about 200lbs. and 3 bodyguards probably weighting a total of 900lbs. there's going to be noise!

Pacman's situation is like the squeaky wheel getting the grease. What about the guys that are doing what they are suppose too? Don't they deserve some attention? Has the NFL become a role model for gang bangers and convicts?

Bill Cowher shouldn have been the general manager and coach well before Marty Shot in the head. KC would have won at least two supperbowls by now.
glen0710/13/2008 5:56:00 AM(Report inappropriate content)
Fine, give Gonzales what he wants - he's earned it. Here's a trade to consider: Herm out, Bill Cowher in.

This would be the perfect time for the Eagles to get Gonzalez. Donovan McNabb could use a safety blanket and a weapon in the red zone. He hasn't had a consistent TE since Chad Lewis. With the bye week coming up it would give him two weeks to learn some of the packages in the offense. But, if I know the Eagles the will use the same company line of " we have enough talent here to win". Hopefully they will break that broken record.

Tony is a class act and DOES his job every week, nissie. The problem is the coaching in KC is aweful! I'm sure if you were in Tony's shoes, you would want to go somewhere and at least have an opportunity to win a SuperBowl before you retire. I say, "Good Luck, Tony! I hope you land a great opportunity somewhere!"

Tony
Do your job and your team may be a contender.

Tony would be a good fit for my panthers. We could use a good, consistant, reciving tight end

I think he'll be trading in Kansas City barbecue for Buffalo wings.

I hate to see Gonzales leave KC, but I would love to see him earn a super bowl ring, even it means he has to go to another team. By the way...this is not the place for ignorance such as "#### Observer"...Grow up...I am a black single girl who want to end her single life, can you bring some changes to my me? Let's mingle at B l a c k W h i t e K i s s . c o m , if you can. It is a wonderful place for black and white singles to have fun together.

cardinals should look at him. leaonard pope isnt providing and one of the best tight ends in the game would only make one of the best passing games in football better
