Mangini wants Favre to make better choices

More from the New York Post
Mangini and Favre yesterday addressed Favre's recent rash of interceptions -- seven in the past three games -- and came away with their own takes on the subject.
Mangini, speaking about the weekly Tuesday chew-the-fat session he had with Favre this week, used a blackjack gambling analogy when discussing Favre's chance-taking style.
"You just stress (that) you don't hit on 20," Mangini said. "Sometimes it's OK to stay and see what the dealer has."
Mangini said he's not trying to reel in Favre.
"You're not trying to coach (Favre) out of being a good player," he said. "You just try to reinforce that everything needs to be a calculated risk."
Favre didn't dispute Mangini's call for more caution with the ball, saying he's "well aware" of his recent run of interceptions. But he, too, made it clear he needs to be who he always has been and continue to take his shots.
"I'm trying to take care of the ball and be a high-percentage passer, but also be productive," he said. "Being 30-for-30 for 100 yards is not very good. Points are the most important thing, so there's a fine line there."

Mangini said much of Favre's greatness is his willingness to take chances, and that Favre has made a career out of "getting 21 when he's hit on 20 in the past."
Favre seemed amused by Mangini's blackjack reference.
"Believe it or not, I'm not a gambler," Favre said. "I know that sounds crazy."
He said jokingly that he's the guy who sits at a blackjack table and hits on almost everything, driving the rest of the people at the table away to another one because of his recklessness.
"If you're betting $10," Favre said jokingly, "who cares?"
But the stakes are decidedly higher in this great experiment and Favre's seven picks in the past three weeks are no joke.
Four of those seven have come inside the opponents' 10-yard line, meaning those are precious points being taken off the board. His third and final interception on Sunday against the Chiefs was returned 91 yards for a touchdown and a late-fourth-quarter Kansas City lead.
Mangini, in his defense of the future Hall of Fame quarterback, said he likes to use the phrase "that's the price of doing business" when referring to taking the great with the not-so-great from Favre.
That price, however, is getting steeper with each turnover and could become more costly when the Jets travel to Buffalo to take on the 5-2 Bills this Sunday.
Nevertheless, Favre, the Jets' prized acquisition and the face of the franchise, isn't going anywhere -- even if he throws another three picks Sunday in Buffalo -- because the Jets are all in with him.

The Jets signed RB Marcus Mason off the Ravens' practice squad and elevated safety James Ihedigbo to the regular roster.
Safety Eric Smith (concussion), LB David Harris (groin) and TE Bubba Franks (hip) didn't practice. RT Damien Woody was excused from work yesterday for personal reasons, according to Mangini.

What happened to the play action pass? The Jets used it beautifully against the Cardinals, then it's been totally forgotten for three games? The last two weeks, its been 5 wide recever sets until Favre has trouble pulling himself off the ground. Then its back to run twice and pass on 3rd & long. ??

The Jets have to put it all together this weekend. At least the Jets have practiced the 2-minute drill!!

Ask Jeff Garcia how it feels to go 30-30 for 100 yards. He throws about 3 yard passes all the time.

Just mo me first type of talk. If you go 30-30 for 100Yds and the W, than be happy.

As i've always said, a very good QB but not a vert coachable player. Fans have basically told Brett he can do what he wants and we'll always stick with u, Unfortunaly for the Jets that mentality is what drives Brett

2theMax,
NOT MAD!!!!!! Just poimting out some facts!!

I just think fans need to look at the big picture and take things into consideration. Unfortunately, most fans are focused in on today, certain players, etc. and forget. No anger, no hate!!!

Why would anyone be suprised that Favre is throwing interceptions? This is nothing new. It happened in Green Bay and it will happen a lot more in New York. That is the way Favre plays, either he's throwing TDs or INTs.

If Mangina and his offensive coordinator could call decent plays, maybe Favre wouldn't feel like he HAD to take it upon himself to put points on the board. How can a team score so many points one week and hardly any the next week? Seriously, Mangina, catch a clue.

I love Brett Favre, but I am disappointed in his interceptions over the last three games. I think, however, that people are not giving him due for learning a new system and new receivers. I don't think they were all his fault. I wish he would throw the ball away, but he also makes some throws that few other QBs can make. Brett is the most exciting player in the NFL right now, and sadly, the interceptions come with the excitement. Let's not forget that the Jets were 4 and 12 last year too. The Jet fans need to be realistic about what they can achieve in one year. With Brett, I think you enjoy the ride--even if it is a roller coaster. I have watched him play for 17 years, and it is still a joy.

Does it really matter what MANGINA says. The team is going no where, they will come in behind Miami at the end. At least Brett puts the morons in the seats.
J-E-T-S, Jets-Jets-Jets, S-U-C-K, SUC_SUC_SUC

Geez mban, you don't have to get mad. I won't talk about him anymore.

Favre takes risks but he is a winner and thers no questioning that...why did we trade for him if we are gonna use him the same ways we used "pathetic armed pennington" I'll take 15 TD's thru 7 games, none of those 11 picks lost a game for us....and when we tightened the reigns, we lost a pathetic game to NE, ( 1st and goal, 3 staright runs...puke) and an embarrassing loss to the Jokeland Raiders in ot ( 3 possessions, 1 first down...puke again

OK. That is one of the most overused comments int he NFL: HIS LOVE FOR THE GAME...FUN.
He's not the ONLY QB in the NFL to have FUN. Other QBs have fun, but in different ways. You ever see Bert Jones play? You can't tell me he didn't have fun! That FUN thing is an excuse that fans seem to have. Sure, having fun is important, but it just seems that most fans think Favre is the ONLY QB past or present to HAVE FUN.
By the way, it's JAMBALYA! LOL!!!

Favre has never been on my team but out of the forty or so QB's that can play I always enjoyed watching him for love he has of the game (he does have fun playing) and yes completed bombs and interceptions.

I bet he misses the jumbolia.

The Jets are 4-3. Now they get to prove they are worthy of being a playoff team.

They've played poorly the last three weeks to squeak out two wins. The Jets have to come together with tough road games to keep them in the hunt for the post season. GO JETS!!

Funny how when LORD GOD FAVRE throws interceptions, it's viewed as a gambling style, he's a risk taker, you have to put up with it, etc., etc.
When other QBs do it, they are dumb, they suck.
Favre is a turnover waiting to happen. Again, what has he REALLY done the last 10 years?
mban6410/30/2008 12:04:00 PM(Report inappropriate content)
Feely has to account for the swirling wind with possible snow/sleet in the Ralph. 47 yds... can't do it!

Does Mangini really think he can change how Favre plays the position after umpteen years?

Better decisions? His career was made with great throws on a bad decision.

How many times has he thrown into coverage but had enough zip and/or placement on the ball to get it through vs. the times the ball was intercepted? The former out-weighs the latter. But sometimes the latter comes at critical times in crucial games.

You have to take the good with the bad. That?s Favre.

Favre throws an interception in the end zone with 2 minutes left which the Bills return for a touchdown....then leads the Jets to the Bills 30 yard line where Feely hits the game winner from 47 yards!!!
