Browns' Quinn out for season with broken finger
Browns quarterback Brady Quinn is done for the year after doctors revealed that the break to his right index finger has gotten worse since he's tried to play through the injury.
Team sources said that Quinn and the team made the decision together Tuesday. Sources say that not only has the break in his right index finger worsened, but it is also starting to injure the tendons as well.
"I knew (further injury) was a consequence if I went in and played," Quinn said Wednesday. "That was something that I was willing to risk. If I had a chance to do it over, I would do it again."
Quinn is now trying to decide whether to have an operation on the finger or just have it immobilized in a splint. Whatever he decides, the second-year QB, who waited 25 games to make his first NFL start, will miss the Browns' final five games in what has been a disastrous season for a team that entered the season with playoff expectations.
"It's frustrating," said the former Notre Dame star, who broke the tip of his finger and sustained tendon damage in his second start on Nov. 17 at Buffalo. "I can't begin to tell you. I'm hurting right now because I love to play the game. I wish I could be with my teammates. I feel bad for the fans because I really wanted to be out there and continue to play and continue to grow in this league.
"Hopefully, this will allow me to grow stronger and something good will come from this."
Derek Anderson will return as starter. Quinn met with renowned doctor James Andrews and the Browns brought in specialists as well.
A team source said that all agreed that Quinn needed to shut it down before the tendons tore from the bone.
Quinn, who broke the finger Nov. 17 at Buffalo, tried to play with the injury last Sunday against Houston. He threw two interceptions and was benched in the third quarter by Browns head coach Romeo Crennel, and an exam later revealed the injury.
Although he only saw Quinn play in three regular-season games, Crennel, whose job could depend on how the Browns finish the season, sees potential in the former first-round draft pick.
"I'm impressed with what he (Quinn) has done on the field, off the field, the way he's handled situations, the way he's handled the team. I like the kid a lot," he said.
Assuming he's back in 2009, Crennel said Quinn would be his starter.
"I had planned to go with Brady as the quarterback," Crennel said. "When he comes back, he's going to be healthy and he's going to be the quarterback. Quinn is the starter next training camp."

It's too bad Quinn is done for the season. I would have liked to see him try to figure out the Steeler's blitz packages, from his back side!

Braylon Edwards is without question, the reason for DA's horrible stats, and has been a reflection to the rest of the NFL. The majority of the games lost would have been different, ie: dropped passes for 1st downs, long gains, red zone and end zone. What a waste of a season.

Browns will never beat Steelers...What a tradgedy of a franchise...

The Browns made a great move last night and signed Richard Bartel at QB. Dallas is already regretting letting him go. I expect to see him activated in a couple of weeks after spending two weeks on the practice squad to iron out the offense. GOOD LUCK Browns!

playoff expectations? should i expect my raiders to make the playoffs next? i don't think so, the browns can have playoff expectations when we start to see signs of armagheddon.

Braylon Edwards is probably the biggest reason why Derek Anderson isn't starting, and Brady Quinn was put in. He dropped more balls than any top receiver outside of Terrell Owens. If he had made some of those catches, some of those games may have turned out differently and we wouldn't be having this conversation...

Quinn will be good, but as ktb8888 stated earlier, it'll be better for him to be an observer at least throughout this season....besides, you don't switch QB's on losing teams mid-season unless he's the main reason for their failures (not the case here...everybody has contributed something to their demise).........................................

I remember something like this happening to Aaron Rodgers too. The first time he really got to play, he broke his foot. Eventually, he got his shot. Quinn doesn't have someone of the stature of Favre in front of him (though I think Anderson is a solid QB), so as soon as he's healthy, he'll be re-installed as the starter. They have too much invested, though I don't believe he's truly superior to Anderson. After getting to see a little of him, I think he's got some promise as a starting QB in the league. He doesn't look overwhelmed like some young QBs look. Of course, time will tell...

Quinn, Your not as good as you think you are. Have a little humility until you prove yourself a bit more in this league.

this just in: word has it that DA was spotted lurking around Quinn's residence and it was DA that actually broke Quinn's finger so DA could get his starting job at QB back. there is video evidence.

Simple logic says that if Pear Bryant loses both the USC and the Whatever bowl ND will play in, he's done, if not he will be back for 2009! Many opponents hope that he does return so what does that tell you!

The way I figure it, it's a good thing. Give this young man a chance to learn, without getting his head cut off, is a good thing. He's real good,. Give him a little bit of time, and he'll be real dangerous.

gotta agree w/ danga -
quinn will get staph too haha!
okay, staph isn't funny.. but it seems like every Browns player who gets hurt, gets it. strange...

crappie QB's and pass dropping, injury prone receivers not a good combo!

Figures... Quinn gets another reason to be kept around making BIG bucks for no reason. Another unproven over paid player. S.u.c.k.in.g money out of the fans and league.
Better yet... the Browns fan will start saying that the whole reason their year stunk was that Quinn should have been playing since day one. Anderson is the better QB. Browns need better recievers period.
