Each week STATS INC. will arm you with the main talking points for each NFL game, including the top storylines around the league.

Sunday - Early games

49ers (3-8) at Bills (6-5)
  • The Niners dropped a 35-22 decision in Dallas last weekend and are now just 1-7 since beginning the season by winning two of three. San Francisco is just 1-9 on the road vs. AFC teams since the beginning of 2003.
  • Shaun Hill recorded his first career 300-yard passing game last Sunday and coupled with J.T. O'Sullivan's 321-yard performance against Seattle in Week 2, gives San Francisco two such games in the same season for the first time since Jeff Garcia had three 300-yard passing games in 2001.
  • The Bills beat the Chiefs, 54-31, last weekend, snapping their 4-game losing streak in the process. The 54 points were Buffalo's second most all-time (58 vs. Miami in 1966) and the most the Bills have ever scored in a road contest.
  • Isaac Bruce caught eight passes for 125 yards in Week 12 — his second 100-yard game as a Niner. Bruce had just 10 catches for 130 yards combined in his previous four games and now has 45 100-yard performances in his NFL career.
  • Trent Edwards threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more last week becoming the first Bills player all-time to accomplish the feat. No NFL quarterback has had two passing and two rushing TDs in the same game this year, but three did it last season (Tom Brady, Cleo Lemon and Daunte Culpepper).
  • Leodis McKelvin returned an interception 64 yards for a Buffalo touchdown last Sunday giving the Bills five total return TDs in 2008 (1 KOR, 1 PR, 3 INT) — tied for most in the AFC with the Jets.
  • Buffalo has 12 different players with at least one touchdown this season — tied with the Giants for most in football.
  • Lee Evans had five catches for 110 yards in Week 12 action after posting just six receptions for 63 yards in his previous three games combined. Evans now has four 100+ yard games this season and 13 in his NFL career.
  • Ravens (7-4) at Bengals (1-9-1)
  • The Ravens beat the Eagles, 36-7, at home last weekend and improved to 7-4 or better through 11 games for the fifth time since 2000 (7-4 in 2000, 2001, 2004, 2008 and 9-2 in 2006). Baltimore is 5-1 in its last six games overall after starting the season, 2-3.
  • Baltimore gained just 248 net yards against Philadelphia in Week 11 — the last team to gain fewer than 250 yards and score over 35 points in a single game was New England in a 40-7 victory over the Texans on 12/17/06.
  • The Bengals lost, 27-10, last Thursday night to the Steelers and have now dropped five straight to Pittsburgh overall. Cincinnati is 6-2 in its last eight games vs. the Ravens and has beaten Baltimore three straight times at home.
  • Cincinnati has dropped six in a row when allowing 27+ points and dating to December of 2005, is 1-15 in such games.
  • Ed Reed set an NFL record with a 108-yard interception return for a touchdown last weekend against the Eagles and now has two TDs on the season (other vs. Browns in Week 3). Reed has 32 interceptions since 2003 (most in football) and his five INT touchdowns are tied with Ronde Barber and Darren Sharper for most in the league the last 5+ campaigns.
  • Le'Ron McClain recorded a career-high 88 yards on the ground last week, including a 1-yard touchdown run. McClain leads all Raven players with seven TDs in 2008 (6 rush, 1 rec).
  • T.J. Houshmandzadeh was held to just 20 yards receiving in Week 12 — his lowest output in the last 33 games. The last time Houshmandzadeh had fewer receiving yards in a single game was 11/16/06 vs. the Saints (15 yards).
  • Cincinnati has allowed 108 fourth-quarter points this season — most in the league. Baltimore has allowed 23 points in the fourth quarter this season — fewest in football.
  • Colts (7-4) at Browns (4-7)
  • Indianapolis went to San Diego and beat the Chargers, 23-20, on an Adam Vinatieri 51-yard field goal with no time left last weekend — the Colts' fourth straight win overall. Six of Indy's seven wins in 2008 have been decided by six points or fewer.
  • Peyton Manning completed a season-high 32 passes in Week 12, marking the seventh time in his career he's had 32+ completions in a single game (5th time on the road). Manning also had his fifth straight multi-touchdown game last week and has 11 TD passes in his last five games overall (eight in first six games of season).
  • The Browns lost, 16-6, at home to the Texans last Sunday and are now 1-5 at Cleveland Browns Stadium this season. Cleveland was 7-1 at home in 2007.
  • Brady Quinn (pulled by Romeo Crennel in the second half last week) and Derek Anderson completed just 40.6% of their passes against Houston and have now combined to connect onjust 49.4% of their passes in 2008 — lowest of any team in the league.
  • Cleveland turned the ball over a season-high five times in its Week 12 loss and has now had at least one 5-giveaway game in every season since 2001 (nine total). The Browns haven't won a game in which they've turned the ball over 5+ times since 10/6/85 vs. New England (0-17-1 since).
  • The Browns lead the all-time series with the Colts, 13-11, despite Indianapolis winning four straight meetings. The last time the Colts lost to Cleveland was in 1994 and Peyton Manning has never been beaten by the Browns (4-0 record).
  • The Browns have scored 107 points in four wins (26.8 ppg) and just 100 points in seven losses (14.3 ppg) this season.
  • Indianapolis has converted 49.0% of its third downs this season (best in football) and 60.3% during its current 4-game winning streak.
  • Panthers (8-3) at Packers (5-6)
  • The Panthers had their 4-game win streak snapped in a 45-28 loss to division rival Atlanta last weekend. Carolina allowed 28 fourth-quarter points to the Falcons after not allowing that many points in an entire game in its first 10 contests of 2008.
  • DeAngelo Williams recorded his fourth straight and fifth 100-yard rushing game of the season last Sunday. Williams also scored on a 5-yard run in the game and became the first Panther in franchise history with 1+ rushing TD in four straight contests.
  • Green Bay went to New Orleans and lost, 51-29, to the Saints on Monday night — its third straight road loss overall. That said, the Packers have won two straight games at Lambeau Field by a combined score of 71-17 (34-14 vs. Ind and 37-3 vs. Chi).
  • Including the postseason, the Packers are 7-3 all-time against the Panthers and have won four of the last five meetings between the two teams. Carolina's lone win in four games at Lambeau came in 1999 on a Steve Beuerlein 5-yard touchdown run with no time left on the clock (33-31 final).
  • Aaron Rodgers recorded his fourth rushing touchdown of the season in Week 12 — most among all QBs in the league this season and most by a Packers' quarterback since Don Majkowski had five in 1989.
  • Steve Smith had 168 receiving yards against Atlanta last Sunday, but was kept out of the end zone for the third straight game. It marked Smith's fourth 100+ yard game of the season and his best since a 189-yard performance against Baltimore in October of 2006.
  • Carolina has scored just 27 first-quarter points in 2008 — fewest in the NFC and tied for second fewest in the league.
  • Green Bay has 32 red-zone drives this season and has yet to turn the ball over — one of three teams in football without a red-zone turnover in 2008 (KC and Pit).
  • Broncos (6-5) at Jets (8-3)
  • The Broncos lost, 31-10, at home to the Raiders last weekend and are now 1-13 the last 14 times they've failed to score 20 or more points. Denver is currently riding a 2-game road winning streak and averaged 29 ppg in those two victories.
  • Denver won the last meeting between these two squads, 27-0, in 2005. That said, these two teams have alternated wins and losses in each of the last seven meetings and neither team has posted back-to-back wins vs. the other since 1992 and 1993 when the Broncos won two straight over the Jets.
  • The Jets beat the Titans, 34-13 in Nashville last Sunday and have now won five straight games for the first time since 2004. New York held the ball for 40:30 against Tennessee in Week 12 — the highest time of possession by a Jets squad since 1/2/05 vs. the Rams (41:08).
  • With his victory in Tennessee last Sunday, Brett Favre has now won at least one NFL game in 32 different stadiums during his 17+ seasons in the league — most of any QB all-time. Favre's current completion percentage (70.6%), if it holds up, would be the best single-season percentage in NFL history.
  • Jay Cutler had his 11-game touchdown pass streak stopped by Oakland last weekend and his 49.8 rating was the worst single-game mark in his career. This game will be the second time that Cutler has faced a Brett Favre led team (lost 19-13 to Green Bay in OT last season).
  • Thomas Jones rushed for 96 yards and had three catches for 21 yards against the Titans, increasing his 100+ scrimmage yard streak to four straight games. Jones is just 50 rush yards shy of hitting the 1,000-yard plateau for the fourth consecutive campaign.
  • New York has improved its point per game average from 16.8 in 2007 to 29.4 in 2008 — the 12.6 ppg improvement is the highest in football this season.
  • Denver has allowed 100 fourth-quarter points this season — second most in football (Cincinnati-108).
  • Dolphins (6-5) at Rams (2-9)
  • Miami had its 4-game win snapped in a 48-28 loss to the Patriots last Sunday. The Dolphins are 2-2 away from home this season and will play four of their final five contests of the regular season on the road.
  • Chad Pennington threw for a career-high 341 yards in last weekend's game and now has seven 300+ yard performances in his career (two this season). The last Miami QB to have more than one 300-yard game in a season was Dan Marino (three in 1999).
  • With its 27-3 loss to the Bears in Week 12, St. Louis has now dropped five in a row and been officially eliminated from 2008 postseason consideration. The Rams have been outscored 166-51 during their current losing streak and haven't scored more than 16 points in any of those contests.
  • St. Louis has now dropped a franchise-high tying six games in 2008 by 21 or more points. The last team to lose seven games in a single season by 21+ points was the 2000 Browns.
  • One week after running for a season-high 222 yards against the Raiders, the Dolphins had only 62 yards on the ground against the Patriots in Week 12. Miami is just 2-5 when being held under 100 rushing yards in 2008.
  • Miami has turned the ball over just nine times this season (fewest in the league) and its turnover differential in 2008 is a +8 — tied for third best in football.
  • Last week, Matt Forte became the seventh different player to rush for over 100 yards against the Rams this season — the most allowed by any team in 2008. St. Louis allowed just two such performances in 2007 (Najeh Davenport and Edgerrin James).
  • Once a high-powered juggernaut, the Rams have just five players that have reached the end zone this season — fewest in the league.
  • Saints (6-5) at Buccaneers (8-3)
  • New Orleans rolled the Packers, 51-29, at home last Monday night and has now put together its first 2-game win streak of the season. The Saints are now 5-1 at home, but just 1-4 on the road this season.
  • Deuce McAllister had five carries for just five yards against the Packers on Monday night, but one of those carries was a 3-yard scamper into the end zone. McAllister now has 54 career touchdowns in a Saints' uniform — most of any player in New Orleans franchise history.
  • Tampa Bay beat Detroit, 38-20, and is now riding its second 3-game winning streak of the season (also Weeks 2-4). The 38 points scored by the Bucs were their most since posting a 38-24 win over Minnesota way back in 2002. Tampa Bay is now 34-2 since 1990 when scoring 30 points or more.
  • Jeff Garcia was sacked a career-high tying six times by the Lions defense last week and still posted a 137.5 rating in the game. The last QB to post a higher rating when getting sacked 6+ times in a single game was Daunte Culpepper in September of 2005 vs. the Saints.
  • With two interceptions against Aaron Rodgers last week, Jason David now leads the Saints with three total picks in 2008. Prior to last Monday night, the last New Orleans player to record two INT in a single game was Mike McKenzie vs. the Niners on 12/3/06.
  • Drew Brees recorded his eighth 300-yard game of the season on Monday and the 21st since joining the Saints in 2006 — both numbers are best among all QBs in the league. At his current pace, Brees will have 5,199 passing yards by the end of the season and break Dan Marino's single season record of 5,084 yards set in 1984.
  • The Bucs have won five straight and eight of their last nine games at Raymond James Stadium. Since the beginning of 2007, Tampa Bay is 11-2 at home with a +22 turnover differential (35-13).
  • Cadillac Williams saw his first action since September of 2007 last week and had 16 carries for just 27 yards against the Lions. Williams has faced the Saints five times in his career and has 388 rush yards in those games (his most vs. any opponent).
  • Giants (10-1) at Redskins (7-4)
  • The Giants defeated the Cardinals in Arizona, 37-29, last weekend and are now 15-1 in their last 16 away from home (including 2007 playoffs). New York has won two straight at FedEx Field and is 4-1 overall against Washington since the beginning of 2006.
  • New York will clinch its fourth straight playoff appearance with a win over the Redskins coupled with a Dallas loss to the Seahawks in Week 13 action.
  • Domenik Hixon had 180 kickoff return yards, 21 punt return yards, 57 receiving yards and 11 rush yards last week against the Cardinals — his 269 combined all-purpose yards are tied for the third most in a single game in Giants franchise history (Joe Scott-279 in 1948 and Tiki Barber-276 in 2002, Del Shofner-269 in 1962).
  • The Redskins went to Seattle and beat the Seahawks, 20-17, last Sunday, snapping its modest 2-game losing streak in the process. Washington has lost three of its last four home games and is averaging just 11.8 ppg in those four contests.
  • Clinton Portis had 143 yards on the ground in Week 12 and now has gone over the 100-yard plateau in six of his last eight games overall. Portis leads all running backs with 1,208 rushing yards this season and is looking for his first NFL rushing title in since joining the league in 2002.
  • Brandon Jacobs sat out last weekend's game with a knee injury, but is expected to be in the lineup against the ‘Skins on Sunday. Jacobs has rushed for 130 and 116 yards respectively in his last two games against Washington.
  • Jason Campbell has just three interceptions in 340 pass attempts this season — his 0.9% interception rate is the best in football and the lowest in Redskins' history among QBs with at least 300 pass attempts in a season.
  • Five of Washington's seven 2008 wins have been in come-from-behind fashion (vs. Saints, Cowboys, Eagles, Lions, Seahawks).
  • Sunday — Late games

    Falcons (7-4) at Chargers (4-7)
  • The Falcons beat the Panthers, 45-28, last Sunday and are now 5-1 at home in 2008. The 45 points put up by Atlanta in Week 12 were its most since a 51-23 win, also over the Panthers, in 1998.
  • Michael Turner rushed for 117 yards (four TDs) last weekend and with 1,088 yards on the ground this season, is now over the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career. In four seasons with the Chargers, Turner had a total of just 1,257 rushing yards and with one rush touchdown against his former team on Sunday, will tie the Falcons' franchise record of 14 set by Jamal Anderson in 1998.
  • San Diego lost for the second time this season on the last play of the game last Sunday when Indianapolis won 23-20 on an Adam Vinatieri 51-yard field goal with no time left on the clock (also vs. Carolina in Week 1). The Chargers have now dropped two straight and four of their last five overall.
  • Despite throwing two touchdown passes (giving him a league-leading 23 on the season) and posting a 126.8 rating, Phillip Rivers lost for just the third time in 21 career starts at Qualcomm Stadium last weekend. Rivers has lost four of his last five starts against NFC teams and will be facing the Falcons for the first time in his career.
  • Matt Ryan has posted a 107.1 rating at home (5 TD, 1 INT) but just a 72.0 rating on the road (6 TD, 5 INT) in 2008. That said, Ryan has a 2-1 record vs. AFC West squads this season and his team has outscored Kansas City, Oakland and Denver by a combined 82-38 in 2008.
  • The Falcons have started a season 7-4 or better through 11 games seven times since 1974 and made the playoffs in six of those seven seasons. The only time Atlanta didn't go to the postseason following a 7-4 start was in 2005 (finished with an 8-8 record).
  • LaDainian Tomlinson had 84 yards on the ground last weekend, his best output since going for 105 yards against New Orleans in Week 8. LT has averaged 101 rushing yards against his two NFC foes this season and just 63 yards against AFC squads in 2008.
  • Just two teams in NFL history have started a season 4-7 and gone on to the playoffs — the 1995 Chargers and the 1996 Jaguars.
  • Steelers (8-3) at Patriots (7-4)
  • After spotting Cincinnati a 7-0 lead, the Steelers beat the Bengals, 27-10, last Thursday and have now won two straight and three of four overall. Pittsburgh has won four of its eight games this season after being down by 7+ points at any time in the contest.

  • New England went to Miami and dismantled the Dolphins, 48-28, and has now alternated wins and losses in each of its last five contests. The Patriots put up 530 yards against Miami and have recorded back-to-back 500+ yard games for the first time in franchise history.
  • Matt Cassel recorded his second consecutive 400-yard passing performance last weekend, becoming the first quarterback in Patriots' history to do so. The last NFL QB with back-to-back 400+ yard passing games was Billy Volek of the Titans in December of 2004.
  • Randy Moss had three touchdown catches for the seventh time in his career last Sunday and passed Cris Carter for third place on the all-time list with 132 receiving TDs. Among active players, only Terrell Owens (138) and LaDainian Tomlinson (135) have more overall touchdowns than Moss' 133.
  • Pittsburgh allowed just 43 rushing yards in Week 12 — the seventh straight and 10th time this season that opponents have failed to top the century mark on the ground. The Steelers lead the league in rush defense and their 66.5 yards per allowed in 2008 is currently best in franchise history.
  • The Steelers have 37 sacks in 2008 (second in NFL behind Philadelphia's 39 entering Week 13 play) and 30 of those have been by their linebackers — most of any linebacking corps in the league.
  • Including the playoffs, New England has beaten Pittsburgh six of the last seven times the two teams have met. The last time the Steelers won a game in Foxboro was in 1997 when Kordell Stewart led Pittsburgh to a 24-21 overtime victory over Drew Bledsoe and the Patriots.
  • Chiefs (1-10) at Raiders (3-8)
  • Kansas City lost to the Bills, 54-31, last weekend — its seventh defeat in a row and 19th in the last 20 games overall. The 54 points allowed by the Chiefs in Week 12 were the most ever in franchise history. Kansas City is 5-0 in its last five trips to Oakland and hasn't lost at McAfee Coliseum since the 2002 season.

  • Oakland went to Denver and beat the Broncos, 31-10, snapping its 4-game losing streak in the process. The 31 points put on the board by the Raiders were their most since scoring 34 in Week 13 of 2007 (also against the Broncos).
  • Justin Fargas ran for 107 against the Broncos last weekend and the Raiders are now 4-1 all-time we he runs for 100+ yards. Despite his performance, Fargas still hasn't reached paydirt this season and has had 145 carries since his last rushing TD on his last carry of 2007.
  • Tony Gonzalez recorded the second 100-yard receiving game in his last three contests (also vs. SD in Week 10) and now has 25 such performances in his career — most of any tight end in NFL history.
  • Larry Johnson has gone over 100 yards rushing in five of his eight career games against the Raiders and has 11 total touchdowns in those contests. The only player with more TDs against Oakland than LJ since 2004 is LaDainian Tomlinson (14).
  • JaMarcus Russell completed 10-of-11 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown last week and posted a career-high 149.1 rating in the process. The last Raider QB to play an entire game and record a higher rating was Jay Schroeder (149.3) on 12/22/90 vs. the Vikings.

  • Sunday night

    Bears (6-5) at Vikings (6-5)
  • Chicago dropped the Rams, 27-3, last weekend, snapping its 2-game losing streak in the process. When the Bears have put 27+ points on the board this season, they're 5-0 and since 2003 (including postseason), the Bears' have won 23 of 25 games in which they score 27 or more, including eight straight.
  • Matt Forte rushed for a career-high 132 yards against the Rams last Sunday and is now just 91 yards shy of 1,000 for the season. Forte is looking to post the fourth 1,000-yard season by a Bears back in the last six seasons (Anthony Thomas in 2003 and Thomas Jones in 2005 and 2006).
  • The Vikings went to Jacksonville and beat the Jaguars, 30-12, last Sunday to keep pace with the Bears in the NFC North. Minnesota is now 5-2 in its last seven games after starting the season by losing three of its first four contests.
  • Despite throwing for a season-low 120 yards last weekend, Gus Frerotte improved to 6-3 as the Vikings starter in 2008. One of Frerotte's three losses came to the Bears in a Week 7 shootout and he is now 3-2 all-time vs. Chicago. That said, dating to when he was with the Vikes in 2003, Frerotte is 5-0 in the Metrodome as Minnesota's starting QB (4-0 this season).
  • The Bears have fumbled 13 times in 2008 and lost the ball on 11 occasions — their 84.6% of total fumbles lost this season is the highest in the league.

  • Monday night

    Jaguars (4-7) at Texans (4-7)
  • Jacksonville lost, 30-12, to the Vikings at home last Sunday and has dropped two straight and four of its last five games overall. The Jags have now lost a franchise-high tying four straight games at home, but they are 3-1 in their last four road contests.

  • Houston snapped its 8-game road losing streak with a 16-6 win over the Browns in Cleveland last week. The Texans' four victories in 2008 have come vs. teams that currently sport a combined record of 11-32-1 (Mia, Det, Cin, Cle).
  • The Texans have defeated the Jaguars two straight (by an average of 17 points) and four of the last five times overall the two teams have hooked up in Texas. That said, Jacksonville won the first meeting of 2008 by the score of 30-27 on a Josh Scobee 37-yard field goal in overtime.

  • Andre Johnson had 10 catches for 116 yards in Week 12 and has now gone over the 1,000-yard mark for the third time in his career. Johnson needs just 76 receiving yards against Jacksonville to break his own franchise record of 1147 set in 2006.
  • This game will be the first Monday Night Football appearance in Texans' history. The last Monday Night game played in Houston was on 11/21/94 — the Giants beat the Houston Oilers, 13-10, in that contest.
  • Both of these teams have scored five touchdowns on their first possessions of the second half this season — tied for second-most in football behind Indianapolis (6).
