CANNED AND PANNED: Coaches who have been fired
Team Coach Career with team Why he was fired

BRONCOS

Mike Shanahan
  • 8-8 this year
    (2nd in AFC West)
  • Started 8-5, but lost final 3 gms to miss playoffs
  • 14 seasons with DEN
    (138-86, .616)
  • 2-time Super Bowl champ
  • 24-24 in last 3 years
  • Shanahan's glow finally dimmed in the eyes of owner Pat Bowlen. The final straw was Denver's atrocious 3-game losing streak to finish the season, and the 52-21 embarrassment at San Diego to end the year. Shanny had once hoped to build a title-winning defense around Champ Bailey, but Denver's defense gave up a shocking 112 points in its last three games. Glazer: Shanny fired

    JETS

    Eric Mangini
  • 9-7 this year
    (3rd in AFC East)
  • Lost 4 of final 5 games to miss playoffs
  • 3 seasons with NYJ
    (23-25, .479)
  • 2 winning seasons
  • 1 playoff berth
  • Was Brett Favre to blame, or the guy who brought him to town, GM Mike Tannenbaum? GMs don't fire themselves and even owner Woody Johnson admitted someone had to take the fall for New York's five-game freefall to end the season. It certainly made things worse losing to ex-Jets QB Chad Pennington in the home finale. | Video

    LIONS

    Rod Marinelli
  • 0-16 this year
(Led first 0-16 season in NFL history)
  • Lost 23 of last 24 gms
  • 3 seasons with DET
    (10-38, .208)
  • 2 last-place finishes
  • 0 winning seasons
  • The true blame for the fallen Motown franchise lies with former general manager Matt Millen, who presided over the bulk of the NFL's worst eight-year stretch since World War II. But despite Marinelli's standup nature and high character, his fingerprints are all over this 0-16 horror flick — especially on defense, where Detroit ranked dead last in scoring, rushing and total defense. | Video

    BROWNS

    Romeo Crennel
  • 4-12 this season
    (last in AFC North)
  • 4 seasons with CLE
    (24-40, .375)
  • Three 10-loss seasons
  • 3 last-place finishes
  • 1 winning season
  • 0 playoff berths
  • This is even a bigger no-brainer than Marinelli, as Crennel has been a dead coach walking for most of the second half of a lost season in Cleveland. A trendy preseason sleeper this summer after going 10-6 in 2007, the Browns' brutal schedule and QB injuries sidetracked any hope of big Romeo saving his gig. Ultimately, his team did not respond, going without an offensive TD for the season's final six games.
