49ers mulling Hue Jackson for coordinator job
by John Crumpacker, Chronicle Staff Writer , The San Francisco Chronicle
As of Wednesday afternoon, no interview had been conducted or is known to be scheduled between Jackson and San Francisco's two-man "search committee" of coach Mike Singletary and general manager Scot McCloughan.
It's not known if Singletary and McCloughan, both in Mobile, Ala., for the Senior Bowl, intend to formally interview Jackson there, but such a scenario makes sense. Jackson became available on Sunday when the Ravens lost to Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship Game.
Jackson, 43, a Los Angeles native, fulfills at least one of Singletary's requirements for the job in that he has served previously as an offensive coordinator in the NFL, albeit for only one season. Jackson was Atlanta's offensive coordinator in 2007, a tumultuous season in which Michael Vick went to prison and coach Bobby Petrino abruptly left the Falcons to coach in the college ranks at Arkansas.
Prior to that, Jackson was with the Washington Redskins 2001-03 and Cincinnati Bengals 2004-06. He was offensive coordinator for one year at Cal in 1996 under Steve Mariucci and coached at USC in the same capacity 1997-2000.
Jackson deserves credit for helping the Ravens prosper at quarterback in 2008 despite major setbacks involving Kyle Boller and Troy Smith. When Boller was injured and Smith became ill, the team had no choice but to turn to rookie Joe Flacco.
Under the guidance of Jackson and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, Flacco flourished and the Ravens ended up one game shy of the Super Bowl.
The 49ers have formally interviewed five men for offensive coordinator: Jeff Jagodzinski, Scott Linehan, Rob Chudzinski, Rick Dennison and Clyde Christensen.
Linehan rejected Singletary's job offer and Dennison was retained in Denver. Jagodzinski interviewed with Singletary and McCloughan on Tuesday.
