2009 NFL DRAFT WHAT TEXANS FANS ARE SAYING

by The Houston Chronicle

A sampling of readers' comments about the Texans' draft from chron.com:

Love the attitude

That's what they need, attitude! A guy who will get after it. I'm glad for this pick; now they need a safety and corner. Not to mention someone to complement Steve Slaton.

Versatility is good

Nice pick. Any one of the USC trio would have been OK, but Cushing gives you the most vesatility. With a veteran like Cato June backing him up, showing him the ropes, he could have immediate impact.

Barwin or Babin?

Cushing is a great pick, but I have to question Connor Barwin. What's up with that? Reminds me of the Jason Babin selection; what a nightmare that was. Hope Rick Smith has something better planned for pick No. 77! Through Round 2, the Texans get a grade of C.

What about Maualuga?

Rey Maualuga would have been the better pick. Even Clint Sintim would have been better. Connor Barwin should be a special-teams monster having played both TE and DE/LB. I hope you Texans made the right pick with Brian Cushing, but he reminds me of Jason Babin.

RB still needed

From what I understand, the Texans' second-round pick is considered somewhat of a project. I wish they had broken the mold and picked up what could have been one of the best available backs in the second round. That would have had the potential to superbly fill a shortcoming on the team offensively.

Simply no impact

The first- and second-round picks baffle me because they did not get an impact day-one starting player. Cushing is a two-down linebacker, and the DE is a project. He played TE for most of his career. The purpose of the draft, especially day-one picks, is to get players who will start and have an immediate impact on your team.

Cushing lacks emotion

I like the pick. But did anybody notice how when they picked him, he didn't look too happy to get drafted by the Texans ? That kind of ticked me off. He should've shown more emotion than that, instead of standing there looking all nonchalant. Come on, Cushing, you are coming to a team that has a defense loaded with young talent on its way to becoming a powerhouse in the AFC.

Project not way to go

I don't criticize the Texans much; however, I do question the wisdom of using your second-round pick to pick a project or for depth. There was unquestionably talent on both sides of the ball that could have had an immediate impact at need positions when the Texans picked in the second round.
