New contract will keep Max Starks a Steeler through 2012
by The Tribune-Review , Pittsburgh Tribune Review
"It was good deal for both sides," Steelers Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert said. "It gives Max long-term security and it gives us security at a critical position. It also gives us cap flexibility to possibly get some more things done."
Defensive end Brett Keisel, free safety Ryan Clark, kicker Jeff Reed and running back Willie Parker are among those scheduled to become unrestricted free agents at the conclusion of the 2009 season.
Tight end Heath Miller and offensive tackle Willie Colon would become restricted free agents if the collective bargaining agreement between the players and owners isn't extended by the end of February.
"It give us the flexibility to at least explore other possible signings," Colbert said of the salary-cap room achieved when Starks signed his new contract. "I wouldn't say we've determined anything other than that. I think we'll all reconvene and see where we are and see what else we can do."
Originally a third-round pick in 2004, Starks started at right tackle for the Steelers in Super Bowl XL and at left tackle in Super Bowl XLIII.
