Owner is still feeling good about receivers QB Romo joins Jones in expressing confidence in group

SAN ANTONIO - If Jerry Jones had any doubts about the Cowboys wide receiver corps before training camp, he kept it to himself. And so far, the team's owner and general manager says he likes everything he has seen from that group.

"Our receiver position is just not one I look to when I say, 'OK, let's think about doing something,' or that I'm worried about," Jones said.

The Cowboys' decision to release Terrell Owens in the off-season was based on what Jones felt Roy Williams could be, among other things. Over the last two days, the Tony Romo-Williams connection has looked its best thus far at camp. Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin and Sam Hurd have also excelled, and undrafted free agent Kevin Ogletree has also opened eyes.

"There was a lot of talk in the off-season about us needing a receiver, but this team has a lot of good, young depth," Romo said. "I know I'm excited about it and I know the staff believes in what they can do. It'll show this year."

Sooner than expected: Wade Phillips said last week that nose tackle Tim Anderson, who had toe surgery in May, would be back for the third or fourth preseason game, but he made his training camp debut Wednesday.

Anderson, who signed in January after sitting out last season following his release from Atlanta, said after practice that he did not feel much rust but acknowledged that it hurt to miss the organized team activities and mini-camp.

"I've just got to do more with it," Anderson said of the time he will have. "Obviously I've lost out on OTAs and mini-camp and the first week of practice, so I've got a shorter amount of time to do what I can. ... I've just got to do my thing and let things fall where they may."

RT Brewster signs: Third-round pick Robert Brewster, a right tackle, signed a four-year deal and was on the field watching practice. He is recovering from a torn pectoral muscle.

To make room for Brewster, the Cowboys waived safety Jerome Carter. The team must keep Brewster on the 80-man roster until the Sept. 1 cutdown to 75, when he can be put on injured reserve.

Briefly: Running back Tashard Choice left practice early with a shoulder injury, but it is not considered serious. ... Anderson and linebacker Stephen Hodge will practice only once a day as they come back from toe and knee surgeries.
