Aiello: NFL unlikely to fine Briggs
An NFL spokesman said Friday it is unlikely that Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs would be fined for wearing red, white and blue shoes and gloves to commemorate Sunday's 10th anniversary of 9/11.
In an email to ESPN's "Mike & Mike in the Morning," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote that he does not think the league would choose to issue a fine given the circumstances.
Briggs announced his plan Thursday night on Twitter, assuming that the NFL would not make an exception to its uniform policy.
The six-time Pro Bowler pointed out that players were allowed to wear pink cleats and gloves as part of the league's breast cancer awareness efforts. But that campaign, dubbed "Crucial Catch," was coordinated by the NFL.
"For the anniversary of 9/11 game why is it if I wear shoes and gloves that are the colors of r nations flag..I will be fined by the league?" Briggs wrote.
"By far the best fine I will ever have to pay," he posted later.
The Bears open their season at home against the Atlanta Falcons.
