Corner may have earned demotion

After two glaring gaffes in the tackling department in the loss to Green Bay, Tarell Brown may not be the starting left cornerback Sunday when the 49ers play the Jacksonville Jaguars at Candlestick Park. Coach Mike Singletary suggested Wednesday that such a change might be coming, although he stopped short of saying Dre' Bly would start at left corner against the Jags. "It's possible," Singletary said. "We're going to look at some things." Two things that undoubtedly caught Singletary's attention in film review from the Green Bay game were plays in the second quarter involving Brown that resulted in a pair of touchdowns by the Packers. Brown ran into free safety Dashon Goldson while pursuing Greg Jennings after he caught the ball, freeing him up for a 64-yard touchdown. On Green Bay's next drive, wide receiver Jordy Nelson juked Brown onto the Lambeau Field grass on a 7-yard touchdown catch. "That's a big thing," said Singletary, who has drilled into his players the importance of getting the "little things" right. Brown agreed, saying, "I missed the tackle. I've got to make that play." On the possibility of losing his starting job four games after taking over for the injured Nate Clements, Brown said, "I'm not a selfish guy. If that's what the coaches choose to do, I'm all for it." After San Francisco's 30-24 loss at Green Bay, the 49ers are 30th in the league in pass defense, giving up an average of 256.1 yards per game. That's a hefty imbalance compared with the run defense, which is No. 6 in the NFL. "It's not like they're covering the wrong guys," Singletary said. "It's a matter of being on the same page consistently. Detail is everything. We're a step off here, not being exactly where you need to be, seeing things quicker, getting there quicker. Nothing with lack of effort, which is great. At the same time, the end result costs you one way or another." If the 49ers go with Bly at left corner, they will be getting an experienced hand in the secondary. Of his 161 NFL regular season games with the Rams, Lions, Broncos and 49ers , he's started 111. This would be his first start as a 49er . "I've always been a starter my whole life," Bly said. "When I got here, that's what I was expecting. I expect to always play on Sunday. My mind-set is to do what I've done my whole life. Hopefully, I can provide a spark." The 49ers signed Bly in the spring, a day after starting corner Walt Harris tore up his knee in a noncontact practice. He anticipated starting at Harris' right cornerback spot, but Shawntae Spencer surprisingly won a three-way competition for the job in training camp. That left a nickel cornerback role for Bly, who has one interception and nine passes defended this season. Showing why he plays defense, Bly dropped potential interceptions that could have gone for touchdowns in the Minnesota and Indianapolis games. Turkey time: After he returns home from practice today, Singletary will assume the role of patriarch and carve the turkey for his family. "I usually mess it up, but my wife is gracious enough to let me do it," he said.
