Report: Brees plans to miss training

Published Apr. 13, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

Saints quarterback Drew Brees is not planning to attend the team's offseason conditioning in New Orleans next week without a new contract, The Times-Picayune reported Friday.

"It is very upsetting to him not being there Monday," a source close to Brees told the paper. "He wants to be there for his teammates."

Brees, who was slapped with the team's franchise tag, could choose to attend offseason conditioning by signing a waiver.

The Saints used their exclusive franchise tag on the six-time Pro Bowl quarterback in March, making it impossible for him to negotiate with other teams.

Despite more than a year's worth of contract talks, the Saints and Brees have been unable to reach an agreement on a long-term deal.

Saints owner Tom Benson said Friday the two sides were getting "close" to finalizing a new contract, adding, "I think that will be done shortly."

Brees, 33, is coming off his best season statistically, throwing for an NFL single-season record 5,476 yards, with a career-best 46 touchdowns.

Brees led the Saints to the franchise's first ever Super Bowl title in the 2009-2010 season.
