Colts DT Foster out for season

Published Oct. 4, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

Colts defensive tackle Eric Foster will miss the rest of the season after partially dislocating his right ankle.

Coach Jim Caldwell says Foster had season-ending surgery Tuesday, less than 24 hours after sustaining a gruesome injury in Monday night's loss at Tampa Bay.

While Caldwell said he didn't have an exact diagnosis during the afternoon, Colts vice chairman Bill Polian confirmed the diagnosis on his weekly radio show about four hours later.

Foster is expected to stay in Tampa until Thursday when team owner Jim Irsay has promised to use his own plane to bring Foster home.

Polian also says Curtis Painter is likely to continue playing after throwing two TD passes in his first career start Monday night.
