Winston plans to visit Detroit after KC

Detroit might be the next stop on Eric Winston’s free-agent tour.

A source told FOXSports.com that the right tackle is set to visit with the Lions on Monday if he doesn’t sign Saturday with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Winston spent Friday night in Kansas City after the St. Louis Rams canceled a visit following the signing of Green Bay center Scott Wells. Winston made his first free-agent visit with the Miami Dolphins after his surprising release last Monday by the Houston Texans.

Lions left tackle Jeff Backus, who has started every game at left tackle for Detroit since 2001, is an unrestricted free agent. Detroit entertained former San Diego left tackle Marcus McNeill earlier this week on a free-agent visit as a potential replacement.

It’s unknown whether the Lions project Winston as a left tackle or would shift right tackle Gosder Cherilus to that spot if Winston were signed.

A six-year NFL veteran, Winston is considered the top right tackle remaining on the free-agent market.
