Glazer: Panthers release QB Delhomme

Published Mar. 4, 2010 12:00 a.m. ET

A surprise name has been added to the list of unrestricted free agents.

The Carolina Panthers released quarterback Jake Delhomme. FOXSports.com was the first to report the news.

Delhomme's agent, Rick Smith, confirmed the move and said Delhomme would wait until Friday to talk to reporters.

Several calls to head coach John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney have not been returned.

The team has already made a commitment to Matt Moore by offering him a one-year tender worth over $3 million.

Despite recent stories that there would be an open quarterback competition, that obviously is not the case. The job will be Moore's.

"My wife and I are ecstatic right now," Moore said recently, according to published reports. "I was surprised. I didn't know exactly what to expect, to be perfectly honest with you. When my agent called and told me about (the tender), I was really excited and really happy. I think it shows they have a lot of confidence in me, which is reassuring."

Delhomme, 35, has been the Panthers' starting quarterback since 2003. He was 58-40 as a starter.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
