Jacksonville University came into Saturday's game against unbeaten Butler wanting to make a statement. The Dolphins did so and put an explanation on a 36-7 thrashing of the Bulldogs in front of 1,933 at D.B. Milne Field. Jacksonville's offense scored at least 34 points for the fifth consecutive game and quarterback Josh McGregor broke two more school records. But it was the Dolphins' defense that really came up big. No one stood out more than senior defensive tackle Haywood Range. The undersized 225-pounder finished with a game-high eight solo tackles, two sacks, had another tackle for loss and forced a fumble that teammate Jordan DeWhirst picked up and carried to the 2-yard line. McGregor connected with Chris Kuck for the score three plays later. "This was just a beautiful way to end my home career. I didn't even know I did all those things." Jacksonville (6-4, 5-2 Pioneer League) suffered its two league losses by seven points to Drake and four points to Marist. Butler (9-1, 6-1) lost to Jacksonville for the fifth time in a row. The Bulldogs outgained JU in total yards (375-298), first downs (20-11) and time of possession (36:22 to 23:38) but JU won the turnover battle 3-0. Two resulted in scores. In addition to the fumble return, Brian Valdez grabbed a deflected pass and raced 42 yards in the third quarter to complete the scoring. Valdez's interception return came 22 seconds after Rudell Small ran 54 yards for a touchdown. Small went off tackle toward one sideline before cutting back across the field and outracing the Bulldogs defense down the opposite sideline. McGregor hit Josh Philpart inside the 5-yard line and the sophomore receiver went into the end zone for his 16th touchdown, establishing a new school career record in less than two years. McGregor passed for 157 yards, his second lowest total of the season, but enough to establish a single-season record (2,471) for pass yards and becoming JU's career passing leader with 4,915 yards, surpassing Chris Horton (4,868). "The records are nice to have but I didn't play really well today," the sophomore QB said. "But I'm more concerned with helping the team get a win. This was big for the defense. They played really well and gave us the opportunity to win this game with their big plays."
