Leftwich secures starting job for Jaguars

Jacksonville, FL (Sports Network) - Rookie quarterback was named Jacksonville's permanent starting quarterback Wednesday. Leftwich had already started the last two weeks after suffered a cut on his left elbow. Brunell injured the elbow on September 21 and needed stitches to repair the cut. He will be relegated to the No. 2 quarterback when he is fully healthy.

"I feel like it was the right thing to do," said head coach Jack Del Rio. "

Brunell was informed of the decision through a telephone conversation with Del Rio and stated that he would not ask to be traded or released.

"He was honest and that's all you can ask for," said Brunell. "I appreciate that he told me where they're headed. The kid had a good game last week and you don't fix what's not broken. If this was week to week, I doubt he would've called me at home to tell me."

Leftwich earned a 27-21 win last week over San Diego, which was the team's first of the season and also Del Rio's first-career victory as a head coach. The Marshall product completed 19-of-28 passes for 336 yards with two touchdown passes in the win.

On the season, he is 47-of-77 for 691 yards with five touchdown passes and three interceptions.

Brunell said that he could be used as a "scout team" quarterback in practice.

"I don't have so much pride that I wouldn't be willing to do that," he said. "I want to start but in the role I have I'm going to give it all I've got and I'm not going to cause a problem."

Brunell had the stitches removed last Sunday, but the cut re-opened, which means that Brunell might be listed as the team's third-string quarterback this Sunday against Miami.

On the year, Brunell has completed 54-of-82 passes for 484 yards with two touchdowns.

Jacksonville also announced Wednesday that it waived cornerback and linebacker . The activated cornerback from the practice squad and signed cornerback Blue Adams from Tampa Bay's practice squad to Jacksonville's active roster. The also re-signed defensive end Michael Josiah to their practice squad.
