Dolphins replace Rosenfels with Losman
The Miami Dolphins have a new backup quarterback.
The team signed J.P. Losman and placed Sage Rosenfels on the reserve/non-football illness list Tuesday less than three weeks after he signed.
An eight-year NFL veteran, Losman failed to become the franchise quarterback that Buffalo had hoped when making him a first-round draft pick in 2004. He was 10-23 as a Bills starter over five seasons with 33 career touchdown passes, 34 interceptions and a 59.2 completion percentage.
After his last year with Buffalo in 2008, the 31-year-old Losman played with the Las Vegas Locomotives of the UFL. He then returned to the NFL reserve as has spent time as a reserve the past two seasons with Oakland (2009) and Seattle (2010).
Rosenfels thought he had fully recovered from an August illness that landed him in the hospital and forced the New York Giants to place him on injured reserve at the end of the preseason. But Rosenfels, who was released by the Giants after being given a clean bill of health, recently became sick again and was unable to fulfill his duties as Matt Moore’s backup.
“I am thankful for the opportunity the Dolphins gave me to come here and play,” Rosenfels said in a statement through agent Rick Smith that was given to FOXSports.com. “I was looking forward to contributing to the team when I signed.
“When I first joined the Dolphins, all tests showed that I was healthy and ready to go. But after practicing for a few weeks, especially in the heat, some new indications made it obvious that I need to rest and allow my body to regain all requisite strength. I want to thank the Dolphins for their understanding and wish them the best of luck the rest of the season.”
The Dolphins (0-6) signed Rosenfels after losing starter Chad Henne (shoulder) for the season in a Week 4 loss at San Diego. An 11-year NFL veteran, Rosenfels was serving his second stint with the Dolphins after playing with the team from 2002 to 2005.
In two-plus games of action, Moore has completed 59.1 percent of his passes for 568 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Moore will make his third straight start Sunday when Miami plays at the New York Giants.
