Vikings claim Rosenfels off waivers

Published Dec. 2, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

The Minnesota Vikings are replacing Donovan McNabb with another veteran quarterback who was released this week.

Sage Rosenfels was claimed off waivers Friday by the Vikings, a source told FOXSports.com.

Rosenfels was on Miami’s reserve/non-football injury list before being cut Thursday. Rosenfels was forced to miss almost the entire preseason with the New York Giants after being hospitalized with problems stemming from strep throat. Rosenfels was released in October and signed with Miami before becoming ill again.

An 11-year NFL veteran, Rosenfels will provide a veteran backup presence at quarterback for Minnesota. The Vikings currently have rookie Christian Ponder and second-year player Joe Webb at the position after waiving McNabb, who had asked for his release after being demoted to a third-string role.

This is Rosenfels’ second stint with the Vikings. He was with the franchise in 2009 before being traded in the 2010 preseason to the Giants where he served as Eli Manning’s backup.
