Coaches get lists of players to caution

Published Oct. 24, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

The NFL has sent head coaches lists of their players who were called for two or more unnecessary roughness penalties since 2008 as part of its efforts to cut down on illegal hits.

League spokesman Greg Aiello says in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Sunday that NFL executive VP Ray Anderson wanted ''to provide an opportunity for the coach to give extra caution to those players to abide by the safety rules.''

Anderson sent the lists Friday. Each coach was only told about the penalties by players on his own team.

Aiello called the lists ''part of our effort to give fair notice to help players stay within the rules.''
