Two sides to meet Monday, Tuesday

The NFL's owners and players will meet in New York on Monday and Tuesday in a bid to resolve the remaining unsettled issues as they push toward a new collective bargaining agreement that would allow for a full 2011 season.

Lawyers and staff from the NFL and the Players Association met for eight hours Saturday reviewing the details and language of a potential new deal, the NFL Network reported.

The talks are set to continue via email and phone Sunday before the parties meet again Monday and Tuesday in New York.

The sides were scheduled to meet with US Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan in Minneapolis on Tuesday, but Boylan will now be traveling to New York to join the meetings, the report said.

The hope is that the Monday and Tuesday meetings will see the two sides agree to a deal in time for the players to vote to recertify as a union on Wednesday and approve the agreement -- before the owners ratify the new CBA Thursday, ESPN reported -- adding that the new deal would be a 10-year agreement.

The main issues that need to be resolved before a full agreement can be reached are the settling of the Tom Brady antitrust litigation and a television rights fee case, the NFL Network reported.

Following last week's meetings, the NFL and NFLPA released a joint statement saying, "The discussions this week have been productive and progress has been made on a wide range of issues.

"Our legal and financial teams will continue to work through the weekend. We will continue to respect the confidentiality orders of Chief Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan and will therefore refrain from commenting on specific issues or aspects of the negotiations. We will provide additional information as developments in this process continue."

According to NFL.com, the major breakthrough came Thursday during a 15-hour negotiating session, when the sides came to an agreement on the framework of a new rookie wage scale.

The NFL preseason is scheduled to begin Aug. 7 with the Chicago Bears and St. Louis Rams playing in the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The two teams were scheduled to open their training camps July 22.
