Three draftees missing NFL Rookie Symposium
There isn't perfect attendance at this year's NFL Rookie Symposium.
Three players – New York Giants safety Chad Jones, Pittsburgh offensive lineman Chris Scott and Indianapolis cornerback Kevin Thomas – were excused because of medical reasons. Jones remains hospitalized following a weekend car crash. Thomas underwent reconstructive knee surgery after getting injured during a rookie minicamp. Scott suffered a foot injury while working out at the University of Tennessee last week and is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday.
The NFL annually requires all of its draft choices to attend the symposium for seminars aimed to help their transition to life in the league and prepare for post-football careers. There are 252 players at this week’s four-day event that runs through Wednesday in Southern California.
It’s believed Jones, Scott and Thomas can make up for their absence through programs offered by their respective teams. The NFL granted that exemption for Minnesota wide receiver Percy Harvin, who missed last year’s symposium because of illness.
Jones and Thomas were third-round picks from LSU and USC, respectively. Scott, a fifth-round selection, played collegiately at Tennessee.
