Nicks unlikely to play against Pats

New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks appears very unlikely to take the field against the New England Patriots Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

When a player starts saying things like, "you have to be smart about it," it's a clear indication he's not going to be able to get on the field as quickly as he wants to, the New York Post reported Friday.

"My mentality is I always like to bounce back pretty quick from injuries, but this is something you got to be smart about," Nicks said Thursday. "We got a long season ahead of us so I don't want to [make it worse.] If I had to sit one week and come back the following week, I'd rather take that than trying to play this one week and being out for a while. I just got to be smart about the whole situation."

Nicks came out of last week's victory over the Miami Dolphins with a slightly strained right hamstring. The good news for Nicks is that the strain is in the middle of the hamstring and not higher up, which is more damaging.

The bad news for Nicks is he has not practiced this week and does not expect to practice on Friday either. He hasn't been ruled out for Sunday's game, but he isn't saying that he believes he will play.

Nicks said the hamstring injury is not serious.

"I don't think it's anything crazy like it would be two to three weeks, four weeks, nothing like that," he said. "Just a matter of me not wanting it to be there so I got to be cautious about it and take care of it. Ask me tomorrow [and my answer] might be something different. I'm hoping to wake up and the pain will be gone."

Nicks is the team leader in catches (38) and receiving yards (575), with three touchdowns this season.
