Jets place WR Holmes on PUP list
Santonio Holmes will start training camp on the sideline.
The New York Jets placed the wide receiver on the active-physically unable to perform list Tuesday, an expected move as Holmes recovers from a serious foot injury that ended his season last year after four games.
Holmes is eligible to come off of the PUP list once he is medically cleared to practice, but he was a long shot to be active at the start of training camp. Holmes recently told reporters he wasn't sure if he'd be healthy enough to practice when the Jets begin training camp practices on Friday in Cortland, N.Y., but added there was no timetable for his return. He remains hopeful he will be ready for the start of the regular season.
Holmes injured his left foot in the Jets' 34-0 loss to San Francisco in Week 4 last season and needed two operations to repair it, including one in February to remove screws from the foot. He has yet to put full weight on the foot while working out on a gravity-assisted treadmill.
During the offseason, Holmes said he had to learn how to walk again after suffering the Lisfranc injury, which usually involves separation of ligaments and joints in the middle of the foot. The rehabilitation from the injury is lengthy and it is uncertain when Holmes will be able to take the field again - especially if he hasn't yet begun to fully run.
The Jets also placed defensive linemen Junior Aumavae and Jake McDonough, and defensive backs Mike Edwards and Rontez Miles on the PUP list. Cornerback Darrin Walls was also placed on the non-football injury list.
Earlier Tuesday, wide receiver Thomas Mayo was waived-injured after recently hurting a knee. Mayo wrote on his Twitter page that he was scheduled to have surgery Wednesday.
