General manager Jerry Angelo tried to trade his second-round draft pick for Anquan Boldin, and when that didn't work out, he traded the Bears right out of the first day of the draft. The Bears were hoping Ohio State wide receiver Brian Robiskie would slip to them, and when he didn't come close to making it to No. 49, they explored options to get out of the pick and found a willing trade partner in Seattle. That sets up Angelo and the Bears with nine draft picks today in the final five rounds, including the fourth pick of the day, 68th overall, acquired from the Seahawks. It marks the first time since 1978 the Bears have gone without first- and second-round picks in the draft and the third time overall. That will make it more difficult for the Bears to comb three eventual starters out of this draft, as Angelo said he expected earlier in the week. In his 29th NFL draft, Angelo almost seemed forlorn in not having action on Day 1. His background is on the college side of the draft, but he didn't lose sight of the prize the Bears already acquired in quarterback Jay Cutler. Meanwhile, Detroit got the first player drafted at three positions -- quarterback Matthew Stafford, tight end Brandon Pettigrew and safety Louis Delmas. The Lions have the first pick today. Minnesota added wide receiver Percy Harvin and right tackle Phil Loadholt, and Green Bay bolstered its new 3-4 defense with tackle B.J. Raji and linebacker Clay Matthews. ''Our work's cut out for us,'' Angelo said. ''Everybody in our division got better. ''We might not have gotten better, but we got better a few weeks ago [trading for Cutler] and [today] hopefully we're going to get a lot better.'' Arizona has been shopping Boldin, the Pro Bowl wide receiver, this offseason, and originally was seeking first- and third-round picks for him. ESPN reported Friday that the asking price had dropped to a second-round choice plus additional compensation. The Bears offered No. 49 by itself knowing they also would have to strike a huge extension for the 28-year-old. It never went further than that. ''I would assume [trade talks are dead],'' Angelo said. ''If it was going to happen, it would happen [Saturday]. How motivated they were or weren't -- they came out [asking for] a one and a three and there were things that I read, so I really don't know what their thinking was. ''We're always going to do our due diligence.'' His due diligence now is to maximize the picks he has. The Bears also picked up No. 105 from the Seahawks, the fifth pick of the fourth round, so they will have four of the first 55 selections today. According to the draft value chart, which assigns a point value to each pick in the draft, the Bears gave up a pick worth 410 points and acquired 334 in return (250 for No. 68 and 84 for No. 105). In trading out of 49, they left on the board Georgia wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, Missouri safety William Moore and Loadholt -- all players they were known to like. Just not at that pick. ''The key to drafting is filling your needs without leaving levels,'' Angelo said. ''We were going to adhere to that throughout this draft. At 49, we had to get a little luck, somebody had to come to us, we thought there was a chance. It didn't happen.'' Angelo remained confident the Bears will find a wide receiver who can contribute as a rookie. That could lead them to Oklahoma's Juaquin Iglesias in the third round. Georgia Tech defensive end Michael Johnson, Richmond defensive end Lawrence Sidbury and Vanderbilt cornerback D.J. Moore are also possibilities. Alabama safety Rashad Johnson remains available, but the team has reservations about his size. The Bears have done well with early second-day picks in the past, grabbing Alex Brown, Nathan Vasher and Kyle Orton. Angelo isn't dreaming about this pick at No. 68, just like he wasn't at 49. ''The player we would have taken at 49, in most normal drafts, that's a double,'' he said. ''We're not looking to hit a home run with that player, so it's not like we missed gold. Those players we targeted were very good players -- we'd like to have had them, but there were no guarantees with any player that we targeted that he would be special.'' WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE Bears Saturday's picks Round 1: 18 (18 overall), traded to Denver Round 2: 17 (49), traded to Seattle Today's picks Round 3: 4 (68), from Seattle 20 (84), traded to Denver 35 (99) Round 4: 5 (105), from Seattle 19 (119) Round 5: 4 (140), from Denver via Seattle 18 (164) Round 6: 17 (190) Round 7: 37 (246) 42 (251) What the Bears need Wide receiver, safety, defensive line, cornerback.
