Pacman's roster spot looks safe in Cincy

The fact Adam “Pacman” Jones won’t play in Thursday night’s preseason finale at Indianapolis actually reflects well on his chances of making the Cincinnati Bengals’ 53-man roster.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said Tuesday morning that the controversial cornerback/returner would be given a breather because of overuse during the preseason. If he were on the bubble for this weekend’s final cuts, Jones likely would be forced to play and further impress Cincinnati’s front office.
“I think he’s due a little rest,” Lewis said. “He’s had a very, very good camp.”
Long known for taking chances on troubled players, Cincinnati signed Jones in May after he had spent last year out of football. Jones was released by Dallas after the 2008 season in which he received a four-game suspension for an off-field conduct violation. Jones already was suspended for the entire 2007 campaign for other violations of the league’s personal conduct policy.
A 2005 first-round draft pick by Tennessee, Jones is tied for fifth on the Bengals in preseason tackles with eight. He also has averaged 34.0 yards on six kickoff returns and 15.0 yards on four punt returns.
“His entrance back into football has been exceptional,” Lewis said. “He’s dealt with a lot of things, a lot of pressures, that people don’t have any idea about ... not only coming back into football but some other things as well. I’m very proud of what he’s done and how he’s gone about it. He gives you everything he’s got out there. That’s what’s been great about him. I’m very excited for him to get back and play NFL football.”
