Manning: I don't need big contract

INDIANAPOLIS
Quarterback Peyton Manning insisted Friday he is not looking to become the NFL's highest-paid player upon signing a new contract with the Indianapolis Colts.
"While I appreciate [owner] Jim Irsay offering to make me the highest-paid player, I told him I'd rather he save that money and keep whoever it is . . . Joe Addai, Charlie Johnson, whoever that may be," Manning told the Indianapolis Star.
Irsay has repeatedly said he wants to reward his four-time MVP quarterback with a contract that would trump Tom Brady's $18 million-per-year deal with New England.
According to the Star, Irsay has offered Manning a new deal worth about $20 million a year, though other reports claimed Manning wants upwards of $25 million per year. But Manning said the contract demands never came from him.

Keep up with all the fantasy implications here."The numbers that are being floated out there, the rumors of what I'm asking for . . . that's not from me," Manning told the paper. "I've never said one word about the contract. I told [Colts management] my cap numbers can be as low as they want them to be in being creative with the salary cap."
Manning, who heads into this season at age 35 after his second neck surgery in 15 months, said he would like his agent Tom Condon to work out a new contract by Sunday with Irsay and Colts vice chairman Bill Polian.
The Colts placed the franchise tag on Manning after last season to prevent him from becoming a free agent, and promised to sign him to a new long-term contract following the lockout.
The Star also reported Manning will not be ready to participate when the team's training camp begins Sunday. It is unclear how much of training camp Manning will miss as he continues to recover from May surgery to correct a disk problem in his neck.
Manning, who has played 208 straight regular season games, also had surgery in March 2010 to remove a buildup of calcium in his neck.
