Report: Eagles' Jackson insures himself

Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver DeSean Jackson took out a multi-million-dollar insurance policy on himself, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Thursday.

Jackson, who is looking to secure a long-term contract extension with the Eagles, reportedly signed up for the policy in August.

When asked Thursday how much the policy was worth, the two-time Pro Bowler was not sure of the exact figure, but said it was worth "millions," according to The Inquirer.

The 24-year-old is slated to earn $600,000 this season in the final year of a four-year contract he signed as a rookie.

Jackson opted to boycott most of Eagles' training camp in the hopes of forcing the team's front office to the negotiating table. But the move did not have the impact Jackson had hoped, and the two-time Pro Bowler decided to put the stalemate aside after an 11-day holdout.

The two sides have not yet come to terms on a new deal, but it is unlikely the Eagles would fail to lock up Jackson to a long-term contract. Sources told The Inquirer the speedy wideout is looking for something along the lines of a five-year, $45 million deal.

Jackson, meanwhile, will hope to avoid a serious injury, which could bring any contract negotiations to a halt. The Eagles' playmaker has suffered two concussions over the last two seasons, missing two games.

"I've moved on," Jackson said. "That's part of the game ... I don't really think about it and just play and protect myself out there."

According to The Inquirer, Jackson is not the first athlete to take out an insurance policy. Several players opt for permanent-disability policies, while several high-profile college athletes take out policies prior to their senior years to protect potential future earnings.

Jackson -- a second-round draft pick -- has become one of the league's biggest playmakers. His 22.5-yard average per catch in 2010 was the best among starting receivers in the NFL. He had six catches for 102 yards and a touchdown in Philadelphia's 31-13 win over the St. Louis Rams in Week 1.
