Proposal aims to bring Pro Bowl back to Hawaii

The Pro Bowl might not be gone from Hawaii for long. FOXSports.com has learned the Hawaiian Tourism Authority will vote February 26 on an NFL proposal that would bring the all-star game back to Honolulu in 2011 and 2012.
But even if approved, the agreement doesn't guarantee the Pro Bowl will return to Hawaii beyond that. Phoenix, New Orleans and South Florida are expected to submit bids for the 2013 Pro Bowl by an April 1 NFL deadline. All three areas also are considered potential hosts for Super Bowl XLIII in that same year. NFL owners are slated to vote upon where the 2013 Pro Bowl will be played during a May league meeting. The NFL is moving the 2010 Pro Bowl to South Florida, which is the site of Super Bowl XLIV. The Pro Bowl also will be played on the weekend after the conference championship games rather than its traditional post-Super Bowl slot. It's unknown whether future Pro Bowls will be played before or after the Super Bowl. The NFL's decision to move the Pro Bowl from Hawaii was met with strong criticism from participants in this year's game. The NFL had staged the Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium for three decades but was unable to reach agreement with state officials on a new contract. The Honolulu Advertiser reported Tuesday that the state's tourism board recently rejected another NFL proposal that would have returned the Pro Bowl to Hawaii twice between 2011 and 2014. Besides being a popular locale for players and their loved ones to celebrate a Pro Bowl berth, the state of Hawaii also benefited financially from hosting the game. Quoting a research firm, the Advertiser reported that tourists who visited specifically for the Pro Bowl spent $28.6 million during their stay. The NFC won the Pro Bowl by a 30-21 margin over the AFC. Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who caught two touchdown passes, was voted the game's Most Valuable Player.
