First-round targets: Here's an updated look at how the first round of the NFL Draft could play out. With draft day creeping up, teams are sorting out all types of options and doing dozens of versions of their own mock drafts.

1 Carson Palmer QB USC 1st — 1/1
The certainly have a tough decision here. But while was named the quarterback for 2003, there's no question he isn't the long-term solution. One alternative is Kansas State cornerback Terence Newman.
2 Charles Rogers WR Michigan State 2nd — 2/2
The have needs throughout their roster. They have their quarterback in . Now Detroit needs to surround Harrington with enough support for him to succeed in the future. Rogers would be a nice start to this building-block process.
3 Andre Johnson WR Miami (Fla.) 3rd — 3/8
needs a dynamic weapon to build a productive passing game. Johnson has the tools to create matchup problems all over the field. It would allow and to work as complements.
4 Terrell Suggs DE Arizona State 6th ↑(+2) 3/6
I think when Jerry Angelo evaluates the whole picture, it would be tough to pass on an instinctive edge rusher like Suggs. The desperately need a pass rusher of this caliber and they may not ever have a better a shot to get one.
5 Terence Newman CB Kansas State 5th — 5/5
Bill Parcells wants to transform the into a more aggressive defense. Having a true shutdown cornerback to pair with would allow the to take more chances to make big plays and create turnovers.
6 Marcus Trufant CB Washington State 11th ↑(+5) 6/11
The would take Suggs if he falls here. Trufant would give the a very strong cornerback to complement a smaller .
7 Dewayne Robertson DT Kentucky 4th — 4/11
The would love to build a dominant front four. Selecting either Robertson or Jimmy Kennedy would really make their defensive front a true strength next season.
8 Byron Leftwich QB Marshall 10th ↑(+2) 9/20
The new regime isn't totally sold on as their heir apparent to . The could find it tough to pass on a quarterback here.
9 Jimmy Kennedy DT Penn State 5th ↓(-4) 4/11
Obviously the offensive side of the ball will get the most attention from the , but they will not pass on a top-rated defensive player if one falls here. Kennedy would make the Carolina defensive line very scary over the next several years.
10 Kyle Boller QB California 8th ↓(-2) 8/ —
There is a split of opinion within the ' brain trust between Boller and Byron Leftwich. Billick loves the tools Boller possesses and feels he could develop into a very productive passer under his watch.
11 William Joseph DT Miami 18th ↑(+7) 11/19
The must continue building their defensive front and Ray Rhodes loves defensive lineman. Joseph would provide a solid complement to inside.
12 Boss Bailey LB Georgia 17th ↑(+5) 12/25
The love speed and Bailey would provide that at linebacker for Lovie Smith. Bailey would be a solid fit in their scheme and allow to move inside.
13 (from ) DT Oklahoma State 12th ↓(-1) 11/13
The still lack that dominant interior pass rusher who can bring their whole pass rush together. Williams' interior quickness would be an excellent fit for the .

Rebuilding the front seven is Bill Belichick's top priority as he attempts to tweak the secondary with another reliable veteran. The really need someone up front who will draw attention away from .
15 Jordan Gross OT Utah 9th ↓(-6) 3/15
The would love to have Marcus Trufant, but he won't be there unless they trade up. And they seem to be backing off reaching for a corner now. They will target a defensive tackle or linebacker, but it could be hard to pass on Gross if he falls this far.
16 E.J. Henderson LB Maryland 19th ↓(-3) 14/19
The would love to come out of the first day with another linebacker. Although they re-signed , Henderson would be a stud in the middle of their defense.
17 Jason Witten TE Tennessee 23rd ↑(+6) 17/30
The have stepped up efforts to get a pass-catching tight end before the draft. But Witten might have to be an option if they don't trade up and fail to land a veteran before draft day.

19 Willis McGahee RB Miami 28th ↑(+9) 19/32
Here's a wild-card pick. There's no secret that Bill Belichick is very intrigued with McGahee. McGahee's rehab has gone extremely well thus far. The have two picks in the first round so they could afford to take a gamble here. Any other player that suffered a knee injury, I wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole here, but McGahee is determined to prove doubters wrong.
20 Eric Steinbach OG Stanford 13th ↓(-6) 9/20
Mike Shanahan generally doesn't like taking offensive lineman this high, but they really are desperate for upgraded talent at offensive tackle. Steinbach is a perfect fit for Denver's blocking scheme.
21 Kwame Harris OT Stanford 20th ↓(-1) 20/26
I wouldn't be surprised if Butch Davis trades up for a guy who could fall like Jordan Gross. Harris is an intriguing talent that could solidify the ' offensive line for the long term, but he may need some time to develop into a solid left tackle in the NFL.
22 Kelley Washington WR Tennessee 28th — 22/ —
The need a big thumper at wide receiver. Washington has the ability to give the ' much-needed size and the ability to create favorable matchups.

The could continue to build depth along the defensive line.
24 Jeff Faine OL Notre Dame — ↑ 21 / —
This wouldn't be a total surprise. The would love to find another interior blocker to strengthen their offensive line. The interior proved weak against top opponents last season.
25 Jerome McDougle DE Miami 16th ↑ (-9) 16/25
The would love to build up their pass rush and add more depth along the defensive line.
26 Taylor Jacobs WR Florida 26th — 12/26
The would like to run more spread formations under Dennis Erickson. They certainly need more numbers at wide receiver to create favorable matchups. Jacobs is a good athlete who should fit well within the ' passing game.
27 Troy Polamalu S Southern California 24th ↑ (-3) 24/ —
The are still actively looking for another safety to solidify their secondary. They love Polamalu and would pull the trigger here if he's available.
28 Ty Warren DE Texas A&M — ↑ 22/ —
The will wait to see what falls to them and could very well trade out of this spot. Warren could be a consideration though because the ' interior run defense was weakened with the loss of .
29 Rex Grossman QB Florida 27th ↓(-2) 29/ —
Grossman would be a nice pickup to develop behind for a few years. The could also go for a linebacker such as Hawaii's Pisa Tinoisomoa; he would provide a very active presence on the weak side and has the ability to create turnovers.
30 Dallas Clark TE Iowa — ↑ 30/ —
Andy Reid is keeping a close eye on tight ends to pair with . Clark is a very good athlete with natural tools in the passing game. Clark's presence would bolster the ' passing game
31 Chris Simms QB Texas — — 31/ —
The post-Gruden brain trust isn't as high on as the future at quarterback.
