Scobee special on more than one front

Don't call Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee a special-teams player. He wants to be known as an offensive and defensive player, too. Scobee played a key role for both units in Sunday's 37-17 win over the Titans with his booming kickoffs and three field goals. It was a busy and productive day for the sixth-year kicker, who had four field-goal attempts and four extra points and kicked off eight times. Of those 16 kicks, Scobee was upset with one. That was a 55-yard field goal attempt on the last play of the first half. The kick, which would have been the longest in Jaguars history (Scobee is one of three players who holds the team record at 53 yards), barely tailed off to the left. "I hate it even when I miss a 55-yarder," Scobee said. "I want to make every single kick when I go out there. I hold myself accountable for that. "But as for those kickoffs - I'll take that every single Sunday." Six of Scobee's eight kickoffs went into the end zone, and only one was returned, to the Titans 21. The other two kicks were caught by Tennessee returner Mark Jones at the 1-yard line and returned 16 and 21 yards, respectively. "Oh wow, I love it man, I love it when he does that," said safety Reggie Nelson, a member of the kickoff coverage team. "That just makes it so good on the defense. It's great to have field position like that. That Scobee, he's part of the defense when he does that." That is exactly what Scobee wants to hear. "I consider myself part of the defense and offense," he said. "On kickoffs, I'm going back there to start them as far back as we can for the defense. On offense with the field goals, I'm trying to put points on the board every time I kick." Scobee was successful on field-goal attempts from 22, 50 and 33 yards. That helped increase his career point total to 502, making Scobee the second player in Jaguars history to top 500 points. He trails only career leader Mike Hollis (764 points). The 50-yarder was the second consecutive game in which Scobee has delivered a long field goal. He connected from 52 yards the previous week against Houston and has made 9-of-16 kicks from 50 yards or longer in his career. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio praised Scobee's performance. "Our special teams were very strong early in the ball game in particular, kicking and covering kicks, giving us a short field and giving them a long field," Del RIo said.
