Another NFL graybeard has caught New England coach Bill Belichick's eye. Free agent defensive lineman Kevin Carter is drawing strong interest from the Patriots, a source told FOXSports.com on Monday. Carter became a free agent this offseason after spending the past two years in Tampa Bay. Carter started all 16 games for the Bucs in 2008, notching 49 tackles and four sacks. The 14-year veteran hoped to re-sign, but Tampa Bay does not appear interested as the team undergoes a youth movement on defense. Carter, who turns 36 in September, has played in every career game and missed only three starts since entering the NFL as St. Louis' first-round draft choice in 1995. Besides notching 104.5 career sacks, Carter has gained league-wide respect for his locker room leadership and off-field charity work. If signed, Carter is projected as a backup end in New England's 3-4 defense behind starters Richard Seymour and Ty Warren. The Patriots already loaded up on 30-something veterans like running back Fred Taylor, wide receiver Joey Galloway and cornerback Shawn Springs earlier this offseason. Carter took a free-agent visit to Detroit earlier this offseason, but is no longer considered a strong candidate to sign there.
