Steelers promote Whisenhunt to offensive coordinator

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh have promoted tight ends coach Ken Whisenhunt to offensive coordinator. He will replace Mike Mularkey, who accepted the head coaching position with the Buffalo last week. Russ Grimm, who had interviewed for the Chicago head coaching job last week, was retained as Pittsburgh's offensive line coach. In addition, he was given the title of assistant head coach.

The 41-year-old Whisenhunt joined the staff in January 2001 after other stints in the NFL with the Baltimore (1997), Cleveland (1999) and New York (2000). He began his coaching career at Vanderbilt from 1995-96 as the school's special teams, tight ends and H-backs coach.

"Ken has been a valuable and loyal member of our staff for the past three years and has earned this opportunity," Pittsburgh head coach Bill Cowher said.

Grimm, 44, also joined the staff in January 2001. He had spent the previous 19 seasons as a player and assistant coach with the Washington .

"Russ has had a tremendous impact on our team since his arrival three years ago," Cowher said. "This promotion recognizes his importance to our team."
