Super Bowl commercials: 10 worst
Updated Feb 11, 2009 4:48 PM ET
Riveted by the Steelers' thrilling comeback? Heartbroken by the Cardinals' late lead slipping away? Then we won't begrudge you missing a few of the Super Bowl commercials. In fact, we'll help you out. Go back and watch any commercial you missed, as we list the 10 best ads, 10 worst ads, and provide you with a quarter-by-quarter breakdown of all the commercials. Don't forget to vote!
The Toyota Venza, we're told, "exemplifies all of you." What does that mean? No clue. The guy in the ad seemed equally confused. What we know for sure: it's a car, and this ad isn't in the class of earlier ones for Hyundai and Audi.
The guy wearing the air filter (nice touch) tries Castrol Edge and the "grease monkeys" make him their king. Makes sense to us. Nothing says motor oil like simian primates.
Cars.com: Nervous car buyer
Not quite sure what the point is of setting a serious tone to an ad that's supposed to be farcical. Child prodigy "David Abernathy" can accomplish almost anything effortlessly except buying a car. The ad-makers had a similar problem with the script for this one.
Gatorade: What G means
I think this is the first time Gatorade actually put their name on these G ads, so at least they had that going for them. Other than that, it seemed to be a bit of a mess. Is Jimmie Johnson saying he's motivated by Gatorade? And what's up with MTV-made dancing Jabberwockees talking about what motivates them alongside, you know, real athletes? Hey Gatorade, maybe you should have gone for less art house and more making an ad that makes sense.
Bud Light: Skier
Drinkability is like a skier gracefully gliding down the hill. Other beers (presumably those "undrinkable" ones) are like a spectacular accident. Know what? So was this Bud Light ad.
Hyundai: Global Domination
We've seen plenty of the same car ads, but Hyundai made us actually pay attention sort of. It was interesting, it made us pause, but in the end, it was a car commercial. At least there was more than just the typical product shots.
Considering my last flying experience, it probably would've been more amusing to have roadies in charge of my flight during a five-hour weather delay. That being said, turns out roadies using the walkie talkie feature on their cell phones is just as annoying as ... when everyone else uses that feature. You can't make a good ad if your product is utterly useless.
The Coke folks are kicking off their "Open Happiness" theme with this ad, in which avatars come to life and interact with humans. Some mildly interesting animation here, but it doesn't pack the same power as the "all comes back to you" predecessor. And Mean Joe Greene it ain't.
Apparently, Heineken wants us to believe that their beer is for smart people who do cool things like go to jazz clubs. I guess. I think I've seen too many beer ads so far this game to make me think this was anything more than an average beer commercial. Besides, if I want to be a pretentious beer drinker, I'll order a microbrew on tap.
Bud Light Lime: Summer state of mind
I don't know what to say about the Bud Light Lime ad. It was just so ... blah. Look, it's beer in a bottle but it's more than that too! It makes things more sunny and summery! As if we've never seen that before. To us, Bud Light Lime just seems to be a ripoff of Corona and, apparently, so are their ads.
FOXSports.com editors Zack Faigen, Jim McCurdie, Jenny Cohen, Al Tays and Zack Pierce provided running commentary on the $3 million-per-30-second commercials.
